Background

After Son Goku defeats King Piccolo, he deliberately spares him long enough to lay an egg. The egg is entrusted to Master Roshi, and Piccolo hatches three months after the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament as an infant carrying King Piccolo’s memories and hatred. Roshi feeds and names him rather than killing him, causing Piccolo’s hatred to waver for the first time. 21 26

Piccolo grows at an accelerated rate and initially regards Goku as the rival he must someday surpass. By the time Raditz arrives, he has matured into a young fighter and accepts Goku’s request to battle the Saiyan, discovering that disciplined ki control and technique can compensate for a lower raw combat power. 26 39

On Namek, the Grand Elder identifies Piccolo as a descendant of Katatz. He explains that Piccolo and Earth’s Kami originated from a divided being: the evil half became King Piccolo, while the good half became Kami. Although fusion with Kami could restore his complete talent, Piccolo postpones that choice. 59
