Personality
Tony begins as a confident, pleasure-seeking weapons manufacturer, but captivity and the knowledge of what his weapons have done force him to reassess his life. Immediately after returning, he shuts down Stark Industries' weapons-manufacturing division despite the financial and political backlash. 145
He remains proud of his intelligence and frequently boasts about his inventions, especially his armor. However, he is willing to acknowledge superior abilities and learn from them; witnessing Fei Shi's speed and the ninja group's techniques pushes him to improve rather than give up. 148 154
Tony is deeply wary of militarizing his technology. He refuses to give James Rhodes an armor while Rhodes represents the U.S. military, fearing that governments would use the suits to expand their ambitions. 155 His long-term drive is preventative defense: after witnessing a zombie version of himself and learning of greater cosmic threats, he commits himself to stronger armor, an Iron Legion, and preparations for disasters before they reach Earth. 161 252 270
He also shows a softer side around children. He gives custom Iron Man armors to Naruto's group and hesitates to accept their Water of Life because he does not want to take valuable resources from them. 152
Abilities & Skills
Genius Engineering
Tony is an exceptional inventor whose primary strength is rapidly designing and iterating advanced armor systems.
- Built a functional powered armor while imprisoned and under a terrorist deadline. 143
- Taught Sasori the principles of machinery and steel armor design. 146
- Developed multiple armor generations in rapid succession while preparing for Obadiah Stane. 148 154 157
- Uses the Tsukuyomi world as a near-limitless simulated research environment, allowing him to test armor concepts efficiently. 280
- Designs specialized armor concepts for extreme threats, including anti-Celestial and biological armor. 330 335
Iron Man Armor Operation
Tony is a skilled aerial combatant and armor pilot who prioritizes mobility, energy weapons, and precision over brute destructive force.
- Uses palm cannons and agility to fight Obadiah's Iron Monger rather than engaging its heavier frame directly. 158
- Deploys nanotech armor to defeat Abomination and stop Hulk during their conflict. 241
- Develops armor capable of surviving deep-sea and outer-space environments. 321
- Avoids treating his suits solely as weapons, intending their technology to serve protective and civilian purposes. 158 324
Shadow Clone Jutsu
Tony learns Shadow Clone Jutsu after receiving a subsystem. 160
- Uses clones to accelerate research and development. 163
- Applies the technique to large-scale work during the zombie-universe expedition. 163
Strategic Foresight
Tony's approach to heroism centers on preparation for future threats.
- Recognizes that conventional Avengers responses may be too slow against a sudden, overwhelming invasion. 252
- Advocates for an Iron Legion and stronger planetary defenses after learning of Thanos and multiversal threats. 270
- Calls the Avengers together to discuss a living Iron Legion after seeing the AllSpark animate his armor collection. 322
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Iron Man armors — Successive powered suits ranging from Mark I through nanotech and Infinity Stone-capable designs. 143 270 321
- JARVIS — Tony's AI assistant, upgraded until it can communicate naturally and independently warn him about abnormal emotional influence. 145 247
- Friday — AI used to operate and analyze the nanotech armor acquired from the zombie universe. 162
- Arc Reactor — Miniaturized power source used in his armor; its theft by Obadiah leaves Tony vulnerable until his chest injury is healed. 149 153
- Matter Converter Box — Converts matter into equal-weight Vibranium, giving Tony access to high-grade armor materials. 296 297
- AllSpark — A modified artifact supplied by Fei Shi that can grant life to electronic devices while ensuring their loyalty to their creators. 321 322
- Iron Legion — A growing collection of mass-produced nanotech armors intended for Earth's defense; later animated through the AllSpark. 157 321 322
Story Role
Captivity, Rescue, and Reformation
Tony is kidnapped by terrorists and forced to build missiles, but secretly creates the Mark I armor to escape with Yinsen. Fei Shi and his companions arrive in the cave before the planned escape, rescue Tony, and introduce him to parallel worlds, supernatural powers, and his possible future as Iron Man. 143 144
After returning to Stark Industries, Tony publicly shuts down the company's weapons division. The decision marks his break from weapons profiteering and begins his friendship with Fei Shi's group. 145
Iron Man's Emergence
Fei Shi tells Tony that Obadiah Stane intends to betray him and that Tony can become a hero who protects his world. Tony resolves to create Iron Man armor rather than return to conventional weapons production. 146
Tony develops improved suits while using the Mark I and a miniature Arc Reactor as bait to expose Obadiah. He ultimately confronts Obadiah's Iron Monger in his armor, aided by Naruto's group. 149 154 158 159
Following the battle, Tony publicly confirms his identity rather than follow Rhodes's cover story. 160
Zombie-Universe Expedition
Tony joins Fei Shi and Naruto's group in traveling to a zombie-ravaged parallel universe. Seeing a zombie version of himself shocks and disturbs him. 161
During the expedition, he uses Shadow Clones in combat and joins Fei Shi in collecting valuable blueprints, technology, and resources from locations including a bank, his own residence, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. 163
Avenger and Planetary Defender
By the time Fei Shi returns years later, Tony has cooperated with S.H.I.E.L.D. and recruited Bruce Banner to Stark Industries, offering Banner protection from military pressure and a place to research. 225 241
Fear of threats such as the zombie apocalypse and Thanos drives Tony to pursue a stronger Iron Legion and advanced nanotech armor. After Fei Shi explains the danger facing Earth, Steve Rogers and the other Avengers come to understand and support Tony's defensive strategy. 252 269 270
Miracle Machine and Technological Expansion
Tony travels with Fei Shi to the Miracle Machine and wishes for a matter converter box. Its ability to produce Vibranium gives him a virtually unrestricted source of advanced armor material. 292 296 297
He uses the converter's output to create equipment for the Avengers and strengthen Earth's defenses. 302
Family Reunion and the Living Iron Legion
Fei Shi revives Tony's parents, Howard and Maria Stark, allowing Tony to reunite with them after decades of loss. 304
Tony later uses the AllSpark's potential as the basis for a living Iron Legion. He also takes Peter Parker as an apprentice and continues designing increasingly advanced armors. 321 322 335
