Background / History

Shrek Academy traces its public legacy to the Iron Triangle—Flender, Yu Xiaogang, and Liu Erlong. Yu Xiaogang is presented as its core founding figure and the source of its motto: “There are no useless martial souls, only useless soul masters.” Statues of the founders and the original Shrek Seven Devils stand on the academy grounds. 13

For ten thousand years, Shrek has held a dominant reputation in the Douluo Three Kingdoms and a long winning record in the All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament. Its prestige is so extensive that crowds treat the academy as a source of regional pride, while political leaders accommodate its requests. 99 109 118

Admissions and Training

Shrek’s entrance requirements include tuition fees, a recommendation letter from a mayor of one of the three great empires, an age below twelve, and soul power above rank 21. 7

Freshmen who pass registration are not immediately full members. Their first major assessment is combat-focused, conducted in three-person teams, and only the top 150 of more than 300 teams may remain at the academy. 42

The academy can make exceptions for exceptional talent. After Huo Yuhao defeated Xu Sanshi despite having only one spirit ring, Zhang Lexuan and Han Ruoruo helped arrange his enrollment; after the freshman assessment, Shrek formally granted him special admission to the Inner Court and rewarded his team with a spirit bone. 13 67

Policies and Controversies

Access and elitism

Huo Yuhao criticizes the mayoral recommendation requirement as a barrier that favors noble families, clans, and sects over commoner soul masters. Zhang Lexuan’s own experience supports part of this concern: she had once failed to enter through normal channels because she could not obtain a city lord’s recommendation, only joining after Mu En discovered her talent. 7

Shrek’s motto is also challenged by its own admissions standards. When Huo Yuhao asks why an academy that claims no martial soul is useless prioritizes martial-soul quality at entry, Zhang Lexuan cannot offer a direct answer. 13

The academy also directs resources strategically toward students likely to remain loyal to Shrek, while using reserve-team positions for heirs of major sects—including the Black Tortoise Clan, Clear Sky Sect, and Nine Treasures Glazed Sect—to cultivate future alliances. 100

Evil Spirit Masters and disciplinary standards

Shrek presents itself as a long-standing opponent of Evil Spirit Masters through the Shrek Inspectorate, whose members have died on missions. 8

Huo Yuhao argues that Shrek’s labeling of certain rapidly cultivating martial souls as “evil” denies affected commoner soul masters legitimate training paths. Zhang Lexuan confirms that Tang San’s destruction of the City of Slaughter was recorded by the Inner Court as the direct cause behind the emergence of Evil Soul Masters, though she rejects the idea that this absolves those who commit atrocities. 8

The academy’s disciplinary culture is also questioned after Zhou Yi threatens expulsion and punishes an entire class with laps for failing to meet her personal expectations. Huo Yuhao openly challenges her methods. 25

Reputation management

After Huo Yuhao escapes Shrek’s pursuit, Cai Mei’er proposes preserving the academy’s reputation by issuing a continent-wide warrant identifying him as the Holy Son of the Holy Spirit Cult. Mu En accepts the proposal, even though Zhongli Wu—the cult’s Sect Master—states that the cult has no such Holy Son. 84

Shrek later attributes the Star Dou Great Forest beast tide to Huo Yuhao. When he confronts the academy two years later, he presents his account of the incident; Mu En acknowledges that Shrek made mistakes and promises future changes. 194 198
