"Someone's dead, someone's dead..."
The shouting from the roadside was loud.
We heard the commotion immediately and all turned our heads in unison.
A large crowd had gathered over by the road.
Then a flurry of noisy voices rang out:
"There's been a car accident. He ran a red light..."
"Which idiot was driving that car?"
"A child is dead!"
"..."
Everyone's hearts sank as we listened to the nonstop discussion.
Although we had all started working at hospitals and had seen life, death, joy, and sorrow.
As doctors, though, what we hated most was hearing that someone had died.
Our profession was about saving people. We hoped to save every patient, not watch them die before us.
That was a kind of "trampling" on our profession.
"Let's go take a look!"
Da Fei was overflowing with righteous indignation.
"Yeah, let's see if there's anything we can do."
Chen Yao spoke up as well.
The other classmates all nodded.
We were all in the profession and understood the value of life.
The nine of us quickly got to our feet and hurried toward the accident scene.
By the time we squeezed through the crowd, everyone frowned.
Someone had died...
A child's body lay on the crosswalk.
The child looked to be four or five years old. His head had been flattened, and blood and brain matter covered the ground.
There was no saving him.
At that moment, a young man and woman, both covered in blood with their limbs grotesquely twisted, were collapsed on their knees before the body, crying themselves hoarse.
"Haohao, Haohao..."
"My son, my son..."
They were the child's parents. Their own arms and legs were already deformed, their heads and bodies covered in wounds and still bleeding.
Yet they paid no attention to any of it.
