Background / History

Kanzaki Rin’s parents were veteran Countermeasure Department employees. When Rin was seven, they gave her a beautiful stone that later fused into her body; it was the legendary Sessho-seki. Eleven years later, its awakening gave her a highly toxic constitution and attracted the Nest of Life’s attention. 397

In her previous life, her parents were framed, imprisoned, and ultimately died in a Nest of Life experiment led by Fujiwara Hirotetsu. Rin was abducted by the organization at eighteen because of the Sessho-seki, though Kamikawa Takumi rescued her. Afterward, she died by suicide and was reborn to the night she first learned of her parents’ deaths. 396 397

Retaining her memories, the reborn Rin became markedly shrewd and self-reliant. She used foreknowledge to build wealth, establish and fund the Resistance Organization, and infiltrate the Countermeasure Department to supply the Resistance with intelligence and equipment. Her long-term objective was revenge against Fujiwara Hirotetsu and the Nest of Life. 397

Her two childhood counterparts encountered in Nightmare Hell represent her pre-rebirth and post-rebirth selves: the timid “Rin-chan” and the cold, vigilant “Kanzaki.” 353 397

Rin is a celebrated beauty at Kashima Academy, where she was known for an aloof “Ice Queen” image. Following her Vermilion Bird transformation, her appearance becomes more striking and overtly supernatural. 3 655

Her rebirth made her unusually mature from childhood onward.
