Background

Asaka was raised in a middle-class family that fell into financial hardship after her father died. She had a younger brother, Asaka Makoto, whose death left her mother, Asaka Shizuko, consumed by grief. Because Fang Cheng closely resembles Makoto, Akie once hoped her mother might mistake him for her deceased son and find brief comfort. 9 57 58

She later learned that her illness had driven her family to make sacrifices to save her, leaving her burdened by guilt. The Ultimate Bliss Cult exploited this guilt and convinced her that sacrificing herself could resurrect her father and brother. Her mother supported the cult's plan until regaining her sanity shortly before her death. 107 115 124

During her school days, Akie was falsely accused and bullied after an unexplained altercation with Watanabe Junko and her friends. She left school early in distress, and later appeared to contemplate suicide near the Edogawa River. Fang Cheng intervened, having noticed both her emotional state and scars from self-harm. 46 54

Ye Yuqing

Ye Yuqing originated as Akie's second personality. Akie was usually in control, while Yuqing would periodically awaken and take over their shared body. They generally did not share memories; instead, they recorded their experiences in a diary for the other to read. 88 91

The pair could also enter the Twin Stars state, allowing them to remain awake simultaneously, communicate directly, and contest control of their body. 91

Their souls were ultimately separated and healed, allowing Akie and Yuqing to receive individual bodies. They met face-to-face for the first time in the Purgatory of Refined Fire and thereafter interacted as sisters. 528 529 530

Appearance
