Background

Itachi was recognized in Konoha as an unmatched prodigy. He could reproduce the Uchiha clan’s Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique immediately after watching Fugaku form its hand seals, and he became an ANBU squad captain at thirteen. Even Orochimaru considered himself inferior after observing Itachi’s training. 194 195

During his youth, Fugaku exposed Itachi to the aftermath of the Third Shinobi World War and impressed upon him the cost of conflict. Itachi later refused efforts to reclaim Obito’s transplanted Sharingan from Kakashi, arguing that peace was hard-won and that Obito’s will should be respected. 232

Before awakening his three-tomoe Sharingan, Itachi and Shisui were forced to fight Root operatives who were hunting fellow Konoha ninja. Although Shisui’s intervention saved him from the initial ambush, Itachi defeated a Root jōnin through observation and skill during his first battle with a two-tomoe Sharingan. 170

Fugaku sent Itachi to serve as a spy amid the Uchiha Clan’s worsening relationship with Konoha. After Shisui’s death and the collapse of efforts to avert the coup, Itachi reported the Uchiha’s planned rebellion. The clan was exterminated on the eve of its coup, with Itachi sparing only Sasuke. 194 232

Itachi subsequently became a publicly branded rogue ninja and entered Akatsuki. Personality

Itachi is reserved, analytical, and outwardly cold. When he encountered Blood Moon’s faction, he immediately inferred from their expensive standardized uniforms that they belonged to a wealthy, organized force—then demanded an audience with Nanga’s leader without showing emotion. 169

Despite his reputation as a genius, Itachi has been worn down by repeated losses. Blood Moon observes that the young heir who should have been full of hope instead radiates gloom and despair. Nevertheless, recalling Shisui and carrying his Mangekyō gives Itachi resolve; even while being overwhelmed, he refuses to show fear. 169 170

His defining flaw is his tendency to shoulder unbearable decisions alone. He chose Konoha and Sasuke over his clan, manipulated Sasuke into hating him, and planned his own death to shape Sasuke into a protector rather than a threat. In his later reflection, he repudiates the way he had tried to guide Sasuke and openly affirms his love for his brother. 211 254
