Background
Kakashi was the son of Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang of the Leaf. Sakumo's suicide after choosing to save comrades rather than complete a mission profoundly shaped Kakashi's early belief that missions took precedence over comrades. Kakashi admired his father, adopted his habit of covering half his face with a mask, and struggled to reconcile Sakumo's reputation with his death. 66 237 255
In his youth, Tenshen trained Kakashi in swordsmanship and taught him not to let emotions become weapons against him. Kakashi's aggressive short-blade style served as an outlet for his grief and anger. 66
Kakashi later served under Minato Namikaze alongside Obito Uchiha and Rin. At Kannabi Bridge, he was overwhelmed by Iwagakure jonin until Obito awakened the Sharingan; after Obito's apparent death, Kakashi received Obito's eye and used its power alongside Chidori to defeat Hikari. 174 405 After subsequently losing both Obito and Rin, Kakashi became obsessed with death, though Minato tried to guide him toward a broader understanding of comradeship and duty. 419
He served the Hokage in Anbu for ten years before becoming the jonin responsible for Team 7. Following the Fourth Shinobi World War, he became Sixth Hokage, oversaw Konoha's reconstruction and modernization, and eventually relinquished the office to Naruto. 275 323
Appearance
Kakashi habitually covers half his face with a mask, a practice inherited from his father. In combat, he is commonly seen with his forehead protector raised to expose his left Sharingan. 66 224
- Wields short blades and trains in close-range swordsmanship. 66
- Uses his forehead protector to conceal his left Sharingan when it is not needed. 224
- Maintains an outwardly expressionless, composed demeanor. 156
Personality
Kakashi's calm, detached image conceals a far more hot-blooded nature. Tenshen characterizes him as a more handsome version of Might Guy, while Kakashi's willingness to join Guy's races despite calling him an idiot reveals their underlying similarity. 156
His father's death initially made him rigidly mission-focused. Minato's guidance and the losses of Obito and Rin gradually forced him to confront the value of protecting comrades. 237 419 Although he appears lazy and is habitually late in ordinary village life, he remains focused and dependable in battle, missions, and leadership. 275
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Copy Techniques
Kakashi received Obito's three-tomoe Sharingan, allowing him to perceive, imitate, and counter opposing techniques. He became known as the Copy Ninja for having copied more than a thousand ninjutsu. 174 268
- Copied and used Water Clone, Water Dragon Bullet, and Great Waterfall Technique against Zabuza. 224
- Used Sharingan genjutsu to create an opening in Zabuza's defenses. 224
- Uses the eye to support the speed and precision of Lightning Blade. 174
- The eye imposes severe chakra strain and requires him to manage his stamina carefully. 224 306
Chidori / Lightning Blade
Kakashi created Chidori at age twelve; after using it to cut lightning, it became known as Lightning Blade. 438
- Functions as a high-speed, chakra-enhanced piercing attack. 224
- Was originally his primary trump card before Kamui took that role. 224
- Could be used no more than four times per day before the Chunin Exam matches. 224
- Became a more routine technique as his Sharingan control and combat experience improved. 224
Kamui
Kakashi's Mangekyō Sharingan technique, Kamui, warps targets through spatial distortion. It is his strongest ability but historically carried immense chakra and physical costs. 224 306
- Tore off one of Deidara's arms through spatial distortion. 432
- Transferred Deidara's large explosion away from the battlefield. 432
- Warped away the Deva Path's metal rod and an Asura Path attack aimed at Chōji. 432
- Initially required time, concentration, chakra refinement, and a barrier to aim accurately. 306
- Overuse left him bedridden after fighting Deidara and caused him to collapse during the battle against Pain. 306
Swordsmanship and Close Combat
Kakashi is a skilled close-range fighter whose early training emphasized short-blade combat. 66
- Trained under Tenshen with a chakra-infused short blade. 66
- Inherited Sakumo's association with short blades, though a White Fang relic in Kakashi's possession was broken during the Kannabi Bridge battle. 174
- Guy challenged him with numerous weapon types and reportedly could not defeat him with any of them. 438
- Uses clones and feints to gather information before committing to a Lightning Blade finishing strike. 439
Ninjutsu, Summoning, and Tactical Skill
Kakashi combines copied ninjutsu, clone tactics, battlefield analysis, and precise chakra control into a flexible combat system. 224 439
- Summons Pakkun and employs Earth Release: Tracking Fang Technique. 224
- Used at least twenty Shadow Clones to intimidate enemies during the Land of Waves mission. 224
- Uses Shadow Clones and Lightning Clones to bait opponents and collect intelligence. 439
- Is listed among the rare shinobi possessing all seven chakra natures: Water, Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, Yin, and Yang. 351
- Possessing a chakra nature does not itself confirm mastery of that release; no evidence is cited for Kakashi using all five major elemental releases. 289
Equipment
- Forehead protector — conceals his left Sharingan until he raises it in battle. 224
- Chakra-infused short blade — gifted by Tenshen during Kakashi's swordsmanship training. 66
- White Fang relic short blade — a blade associated with Sakumo that was shattered by an Iwagakure ninja during the Kannabi Bridge mission. 174
Relationships
- Hatake Sakumo — Father and the White Fang of the Leaf. Sakumo's suicide shaped Kakashi's early devotion to missions and left him struggling with his father's legacy. 66 237
- Tenshen — Swordsmanship teacher who warned Kakashi not to let emotions be used against him. 66
- Minato Namikaze — Jonin leader and mentor. Minato tried to help Kakashi recover from the deaths of Obito and Rin and redefine what it meant to be a shinobi. 405 419
- Uchiha Obito — Teammate and close friend whose eye Kakashi received after Obito's apparent death. Kakashi later carried the burden of failing to protect Rin, whom Obito had entrusted to him. 174 336
- Rin — Teammate whose death deepened Kakashi's grief and obsession with death. 419
- Might Guy — Friend and rival. Beneath their contrasting appearances, both share an intensely competitive and hot-blooded nature. 156
- Uzumaki Naruto — Team 7 student and eventual successor as Hokage. Kakashi later formally prepared Naruto for the position. 321 323
- Uchiha Sasuke — Team 7 student and Kakashi's closest technical match; Kakashi gave him special training and taught him Chidori. 321
- Haruno Sakura — Team 7 member and later mission partner. 321
Story Role / Major Arcs
Kannabi Bridge
As the jonin leader of Minato's team, Kakashi confronted three Iwagakure jonin while still lacking the Sharingan. He was nearly killed by Mahiru, forced into passive defense against Daishi's camouflage technique, and lost his father's short blade to Hikari before Obito's Sharingan and Chidori turned the battle. 405
Team 7 and the Land of Waves
Kakashi led Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura during their escort mission against Zabuza Momochi. He copied Zabuza's Water Release techniques, escaped the Water Prison Technique, used Sharingan genjutsu, and defeated Zabuza's techniques at the cost of collapsing for a week afterward. 224
Akatsuki Conflicts
Kakashi's Mangekyō Sharingan became central to his later battles. Against Deidara, Kamui's poor initial precision and enormous cost left him bedridden; by the Pain invasion, he could use it to remove incoming missiles but still collapsed from overexertion. 306 432
Sixth Hokage
After the war, Kakashi led Konoha through a stable reconstruction period. He treated war criminals with relative leniency, developed the village's economy and technology, prepared Naruto through renewed theoretical study, and retired after establishing conditions for Naruto's succession. 323
Trivia
- Kakashi's Academy and promotion record—graduating at five, becoming a chunin at six, and inventing Chidori at twelve—is described as an “unbeatable résumé.” 438
- His ordinary battle stamina was a defining weakness: he is assigned a stamina rating of six and repeatedly suffers collapse after extensive Mangekyō use. 306
- Zabuza is described by Kakashi as the strongest practitioner of silent-killing techniques. 401
