Background / History

Yin Suzhi is Ning Jing's wife and the mother of Ning Jin, Ning Mu, and Ning Zha. As an outsider to the Ning family bloodline, she was privately blamed by Ning Jing when their elder sons did not inherit the Seven Treasures Glazed Pagoda martial soul. Ning Jing initially placed great hopes on Ning Zha because of the boy's exceptional physique, but turned against him after Ning Zha awakened neither martial soul nor innate soul power. 1

When Yu Kun of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan demands Ning Zha's life, Yin Suzhi tries to stop Ning Jing from beating their son. After Ning Jing agrees to surrender Ning Zha, she kneels before Yu Kun, strikes her head against the ground three times, and offers her own life in exchange for Ning Zha's; Yu Kun refuses. 2

Yin Suzhi witnesses Ning Zha sever his ties to the family and take his own life. She rushes to him, tries unsuccessfully to stem the blood from his throat wound, and faints while holding him. 3 When the branch elders forbid Ning Zha's burial in the Ning ancestral hall, she resolves to take him away from Heaven Dou City herself. 4

She buries Ning Zha on an isolated grassy slope west of Heaven Dou City, marking the grave with a rough bluestone slab. Accompanied by Ning Jin and Ning Mu, she mourns him and blames herself for being unable to protect him. 5

After returning home, Yin Suzhi confronts Ning Jing for calling Ning Zha a “wretched spawn.” When Ning Jing threatens their surviving sons, she shields them and declares that she, Ning Jin, and Ning Mu will no longer remain in his way. 7

Personality

Yin Suzhi is fiercely protective of her children, particularly Ning Zha. Her willingness to offer her life to Yu Kun and later physically shield Ning Zha's spirit tablet show that she values her son's life and memory above her own safety. 2 25 26

Ning Zha's apparent death leaves her grief-stricken and burdened by guilt. She repeatedly describes herself as useless for failing to protect him, but her grief gradually becomes resolve: she removes him from the clan's control, honors him at his grave, and refuses to abandon his memory despite Ning Jing's threats. 4 5 25

Ning Zha's Persecution and Death

Yin Suzhi is the sole parent who openly fights for Ning Zha when the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan seeks retaliation. Her helpless plea contrasts directly with Ning Jing's decision to surrender their son. 2

She witnesses Ning Zha's death and is devastated by the sect's subsequent refusal to recognize him as a member of the Ning family. She personally takes responsibility for his burial outside Heaven Dou City. 3 5

Break with Ning Jing

Following the funeral, Ning Jing blames Yin Suzhi and their children for his loss of status. Yin Suzhi protects Ning Jin and Ning Mu from him, then chooses to separate herself and her sons from his ambitions. 7

Protecting Ning Zha's Memory

Yin Suzhi establishes a shrine containing Ning Zha's spirit tablet and a clay figurine she carved in his likeness. When Ning Jing attempts to destroy it out of fear for his own standing, she refuses to yield. 25 26

Ning Jing violently kicks her, causing her to strike her head against a wall. While she lies injured, he destroys the figurine; Yin Suzhi loses consciousness amid the shattered pieces. 26
