From Itachi's perspective, Konoha was ultimately the best place for his younger brother to belong. Of course, after his conversation with Naruto, Itachi wasn't truly "blindly loyal" to Konohagakure, either. When all was said and done, the person he cared about most was his younger brother, Sasuke Uchiha. If Sasuke was willing to stay in Konoha, and Konoha could make him a "hero," then Itachi would consider that the best of both worlds.
But if that wasn't possible,
Itachi would still put Sasuke's safety and future first.
The original story had already made that abundantly clear.
Itachi had a backup plan, too.
For now, though, Itachi still found a way to send word of the Akatsuki's impending operation back to Konohagakure through a special channel.
