At midnight, many people had long since fallen asleep, while many others were still hard at work, full of energy—like the soldiers standing night watch at Arlington Military Base.
However, in a military fortress built for both offense and defense, the guards were usually just going through the motions. After all, hardly anyone could breach such a stronghold.
So throughout the long night, many of the guards would chat with one another whenever no one was around, passing the endless hours of darkness.
"When will this ever end?"
At the base entrance, a tall, burly soldier wiped the sweat from his forehead. "I thought this would be a cushy assignment. Serve long enough and I could get promoted. Who knew I'd end up guarding a monster?"
The other guard, tall and thin, sighed at that. "Yeah. Just thinking about that monster hidden beneath this base makes me worry it'll break out at any moment."
Then, with a trace of relief on his face, the tall, thin soldier said, "Luckily, we're only guarding the entrance. If we had to guard that monster's cage, it'd be way too much for my heart."
"Exactly."
The burly soldier nodded in complete agreement. "I heard the military even wants to replicate and control that kind of monster. They're completely insane."
The tall, thin soldier quickly motioned for silence. After looking around and making sure no one was nearby, he said, "Keep it down. If those people hear us, it'll be a trou—ugh! Glug glug glug..."
