"Where exactly are we?"
"I-I don't know."
Huang Chuxia and Ma Xuanyu clutched each other's hands tightly, shoulder to shoulder as they wandered the passageways in confusion.
They had worked hard all day yesterday and had even volunteered for overtime, working straight through until midnight. They had finally finished up and left, only to look up and find that the entire world had changed!
The house was still the same old house, but it was far newer than the one they had spent two months restoring. There were no wires, electrical appliances, scaffolding, or repair tools and materials anywhere inside.
The house was still empty, but it was no longer the sort of emptiness that came from being dilapidated and in need of complete restoration. It was the emptiness of wartime chaos, of every resident fleeing for their lives in panic.
Even worse, they could not get out!
The residence only had three courtyards. It should not have taken even ten minutes to walk from the front gate to the back door, yet they had gone back and forth at least thirty or forty times!
They walked until their stomachs growled, until their bodies grew colder and colder, until their hearts quailed and their legs went weak. Even the slightest sound made them jump.
"Can our phones still get through?"
The two instinctively lit up their screens and checked at the same time. Still no signal. They sighed in disappointment, then hurriedly turned their screens off at the same time.
Thank heavens, their phones had been charging in the outlets before they left. Even so, Huang Chuxia's phone only had 46% battery left, while Ma Xuanyu's had only 52%.
These days, once your phone ran out of battery, you really could not do anything.
