Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Dou Zong (recovered soul power) 4 Recovered through Life Gold and soul-restoring medicine. Though below his peak, he believes this is sufficient to resist invading God Kings; he also retains Heavenly Flame.

Background

Medicine Elder was once a renowned powerhouse of the Dou Qi Continent and co-founded the Star Meteor Pavilion with his friends. He was a first-rate power in his homeland, though still below the Central Plains’ peak forces and the ancient clans. He was also a seventh-grade alchemist and regarded himself as the Dou Qi Continent’s number one alchemist 1.

His former disciple, Han Feng, betrayed him by collaborating with the Soul Hall and ambushing him. Medicine Elder’s physical body was destroyed; he escaped as a soul using a secret technique and hid within a ring 1.

The ring later passed to Phoenix King. Energy released during Phoenix King’s birth awakened Medicine Elder and allowed his soul to remain active. After observing the young Heavenly Demon Phoenix for several years, Medicine Elder overcame his distrust of disciples and accepted him as his student when Phoenix King turned three 1.

After arriving in the Star Dou Forest, Medicine Elder revealed himself to Gu Yuena and explained the Dou Qi Continent’s cultivation system. He accepted her offer of medicinal resources and Life Gold in exchange for teaching the soul beasts methods of cultivation, alchemy, and power development 1.

Appearance

Medicine Elder manifests as a footless remnant soul rather than a living body.

  • Has no feet, resembling a ghost in Dugu Yan’s eyes 14.
  • Resides within the ring worn by Phoenix King 1.
  • His soul form cannot eat physical food 13.

Personality

Medicine Elder is strict with Phoenix King’s training, correcting his posture and imposing doubled practice when assigned cycles are not completed. Despite this discipline, Phoenix King considers him genuinely kind and protective 1.

Han Feng’s betrayal left Medicine Elder reluctant to trust another disciple. He accepted Phoenix King only after judging him to be kind to those close to him and unlike Han Feng 1. He remains especially sensitive to an apprentice’s character and openly condemns disloyalty 24.

He is curious, analytical, and often critical of the Douluo Continent’s reliance on primitive strength. He pushes the soul beasts to develop alchemy, cultivation methods, Soul Guidance Devices, intelligence gathering, and human talent recruitment rather than relying solely on bloodline and force 1.

Abilities & Skills

Alchemy

Medicine Elder is a high-level alchemist capable of refining pills from Douluo Continent resources.

  • Identifies himself as the Dou Qi Continent’s number one alchemist 1.
  • Can refine pills up to the seventh grade 1.
  • Uses soul-restoring medicine to aid his own recovery 4.
  • Promises the Auspicious Beast his best pills due to its potential and importance to soul beast fortune 3.
  • Believes the Immortal Herbs from the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well can be used to produce superior pills 13.
  • Proposes creating artificial flames, including composite flames stronger than ordinary Beast Fire 7.

Heavenly Flame

Medicine Elder retains Heavenly Flame despite his incomplete recovery.

  • Considers Heavenly Flame a rare and formidable force even by Dou Qi Continent standards 4.
  • Offers to use it to remove the accumulated poison affecting the Dugu family, conditional on their cooperation 14.
  • Cannot teach Phoenix King the Burning Mantra effectively because the Douluo Continent appears to lack Heavenly Flames 5.

Cultivation Instruction

Medicine Elder adapts Dou Qi cultivation to the Douluo Continent and trains both Phoenix King and the soul beasts.

  • Requires Phoenix King to build his body and cultivate Spirit Power before attempting Dou Qi 1.
  • Has Di Tian guide soul beasts in Dou Qi practice to seek god-level combat strength outside the God Realm’s restrictions 4.
  • Modified Phoenix King’s Baji Fist to suit a growing child’s body and establish a stronger foundation 5.
  • Offers the Three-Flower Fire Gathering Technique, a slow Yellow-tier method that strengthens Dou Qi, body, and soul beyond one’s peers at the same rank 5.
  • Offers the Fire Building Technique, a fire-and-wood foundation method that improves Dou Qi control, alchemical sensitivity, and soul perception at the cost of immense resources 5.
  • Provides Phoenix King with the Earth-tier Victorious Fighting Buddha cultivation method and its matching Ruyi Staff Technique 7.

Research and Analysis

Medicine Elder investigates fundamental aspects of Douluo cultivation rather than accepting its conventions.

  • Criticizes the soul-ring system as deformed and unsustainable because it depends on hunting soul beasts 2.
  • Conducts tests with Dugu Yan to determine why Soul Masters gain spirit rings from slain soul beasts 12.
  • Theorizes that a Soul Beast’s inner core forms the basis of a soul ring, raising the possibility that a Soul Master could obtain one by directly absorbing an inner core without killing the beast 13.
  • Determines that the Dugu family’s inherited poison likely began when an ancestor absorbed an incompatible poisonous soul ring, causing toxins to accumulate and pass through the bloodline 14.

Weapon Forging

Medicine Elder designs and prepares to forge a staff-type weapon for Phoenix King.

  • Intends to create a weapon approaching divine-artifact quality, while accepting that it may need later upgrades 37 39.
  • Selects Soul Bones and rare metals as forging materials 38.
  • Plans to integrate Soul Bones into the staff so it can wield their soul skills and later sublimate if Phoenix King becomes a god 38.
  • Selected materials include a 50,000-year Red Fire Soul Bone, a 90,000-year Titan Giant Ape Soul Bone, a 100,000-year Azure Dragon Bloodline Soul Bone, and a 100,000-year Holy Attribute Tiger Soul Bone 38.

Relationships

  • Phoenix King — His disciple. Medicine Elder trains him rigorously, modifies his martial routine, selects cultivation methods for him, and protects his childhood from Di Tian and Gu Yuena’s plans for offspring 1 3 5 7.
  • Han Feng — Former disciple and senior brother to Phoenix King. Han Feng betrayed Medicine Elder with the Soul Hall, destroying his body and leaving him as a remnant soul 1.
  • Gu Yuena — Ally and provider of resources for his recovery. Medicine Elder teaches her faction cultivation and supports her struggle against the God Realm, while regarding her as Phoenix King’s future wife 1 3.
  • Di Tian — Soul beast ally who respects Medicine Elder’s strength and knowledge. Medicine Elder directs him to guide soul beasts in Dou Qi cultivation and opposes rushing Phoenix King into producing offspring 3 4 10.
  • Dugu Yan — Test subject and potential subordinate. Medicine Elder investigates spirit rings through her and offers to cure her inherited poison 12 14.
  • Dugu Bo — Captured subordinate of Di Tian whom Medicine Elder chooses to keep alive because he may be useful later; Medicine Elder also offers to treat his family’s poison 12 14.
  • Auspicious Beast — Receives Medicine Elder’s promise of high-quality pills due to its exceptional potential and connection to soul beast fortune 3.
