Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was born with the resources and pedigree of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect, but his martial soul mutated in an exceptionally poor direction. He possessed only half a level of innate spirit power and remained stuck at level 29 as he approached fifty, unable to reach level 30. Unable to advance as a Spirit Master, he devoted himself to Spirit theory instead. 5

Through his sect connections, Xiaogang became a guest elder at Notting Junior Spirit Master Academy, where he maintained a large collection of research materials and studied each morning. 5

He received the mysterious novel I Taught a God, which described his failed cultivation, theoretical career, and eventual success in guiding a disciple to godhood. The book reignited his confidence and convinced him that he was destined to teach a god. 5

While reading, Xiaogang identified Tang San as a likely twin martial soul awakener from the combination of Blue Silver Grass and innate full spirit power. He also accepted the book's claims regarding Lone Bamboo spirit beasts, including their unusual disguises and compatibility with Tang San's martial soul. 5 6

Xiaogang later intervened when the Notting Academy gatekeeper assaulted Tang San, verified Tang San's Spirit Hall certificate, and personally brought him into the academy. He accepted Tang San as his disciple after the boy revealed the Clear Sky Hammer martial soul. 25 27

He accompanied Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest to obtain a first spirit ring. The Lone Bamboo's unexpected Sacrifice left him unable to explain the event, and he was later poisoned during their escape from a Mandala Snake. After recovering, he became absorbed in the possibility that Tang San's eighteen Lone Bamboo spirit rings could lead them to the God Realm. 27 28 29

Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man with a slightly bloated build. Years of maintaining an expressionless demeanor have left his facial muscles stiff, making even his attempts at smiling appear rigid. 25

Personality

Xiaogang is intensely proud of his theoretical knowledge and readily calls himself the continent's foremost Spirit Master theorist. Receiving a book titled I Taught a God initially provokes him as a challenge to that reputation, but he quickly decides that the “god-teaching” master described within must be himself. 5

He is diligent and exceptionally invested in research, recalling detailed statistics from his study of 647 Blue Silver Grass martial soul possessors. However, his confidence also makes him quick to accept flattering or convenient conclusions, including treating Tang San's silence as consent to becoming his disciple and accepting unfamiliar Lone Bamboo research as something he had simply forgotten. 6

Despite his vanity, Xiaogang is sincerely devoted to Tang San's growth. He protects him at the academy, provides food and equipment, teaches him about spirit beasts, and becomes visibly excited at every sign that Tang San may fulfill the path described in the novel. 25 27 29
