The temple was not entirely empty, however; a fair number of survivors were still sheltering inside.

After the disaster struck, many people assumed the invisible Blood-Sucking Monsters were akin to the vengeful spirits that fed on human vitality. They claimed these monsters originated from the netherworld and that temples and Taoist shrines were their natural bane, leading to overcrowding in major temples and even several skirmishes over territory.

Even so, many remained holed up within the temple walls, unwilling to leave.

Captain Lian raised a hand, and several soldiers in camouflage immediately stepped forward. They formed a human ladder and scaled the wall into the courtyard. Many survivors hiding in the main hall heard the commotion and craned their necks to look outside. "What are these soldiers doing here?"
