Background / History
On the third day of school, Sudo rushed into Class D seeking help for Yoshida, who was surrounded by second-year students behind the gym. He sent Kanzaki Toru ahead to intervene while he went to find Chabashira-sensei. Sudo and Yoshida were already part of Class D's athletic social circle. 4
He became one of the targets of Ryuen Kakeru's effort to destabilize Class D. Kondo, a Class C basketball-club member, built trust with Sudo through training and repeatedly encouraged him to consider an unspecified offer. The arrangement was designed to exploit Sudo's temper and remove Class D's most important physical competitor. 13
When Sudo was forcibly assigned to a cross-class group with Ishizaki Daichi, he unsuccessfully applied for a transfer and lashed out in frustration. Ryuen's group later surrounded and provoked him near the Class C dormitory area, hoping he would strike first and face expulsion. Sudo recognized the trap and refused to fight despite the sustained abuse. 16 21
Ryuen later attempted to revive a prior verbal-warning record concerning a shoving match between Sudo and Ishizaki. The record included video footage showing Sudo reaching out first, but the time anchor was verified and could not be altered for use against him. 32 33
Sudo's relationship with Ishizaki shifted from hostility to cooperation. They trained and competed together, reconciled through repeated exchanges of sports drinks, and eventually became classmates after Ishizaki transferred to Class D based on his cross-class cooperation evaluation. 51 53 63
Appearance
Sudo is a red-haired, heavily built athlete whose appearance reflects his constant physical training. He has a sharp-featured face and carries a visible old scar on the bridge of his nose. 4 9 21
- Red hair. 4
- Muscular chest and pronounced arm definition from weight training. 9 21
- Rough, powerful hands covered in calluses. 9
- A scar on the bridge of his nose from an earlier fight. 21
- Usually associated with sports drinks, gym equipment, and athletic events. 35 51 68
Personality
Early on, Sudo is loud, impulsive, and quick to answer conflict with physical force. He expresses loyalty through action rather than careful wording: he urgently seeks aid for Yoshida, offers Kanzaki help after Yoshida is rescued, and takes pride in physical strength. 4 9
He is especially vulnerable to provocation because he equates restraint with cowardice. During Ryuen's trap, however, he realizes that striking back would serve his enemies' plan. His decision not to fight becomes the central turning point in his development. 21
Later, Sudo becomes more self-aware and cooperative. He participates in formal discussions, proposes emotional-control training for adversarial events, and uses his own experience to argue that competition can foster growth rather than simply punish weakness. 64 69
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Combat
Sudo is Class D's foremost physical competitor, combining weight-training strength with controlled close-range fighting.
- Bench-presses 100 kilograms, attracting both admiration and rivalry from classmates. 9
- Defeated Kondo in two consecutive rounds of a physical confrontation event. 51
- Used evasive movement, an elbow strike, blocks, a sweeping kick, and a waist-lock throw rather than uncontrolled attacks. 51
- His strength and weight made him the center of Ishizaki's cavalry-battle formation. 68
Emotional Control
Sudo's most significant growth is learning to channel anger without surrendering judgment.
- Refused to attack while surrounded by six Class C students who were attempting to provoke an expulsion-worthy incident. 21
- Maintained composure when Kondo provoked him before their confrontation match. 51
- Was later assessed as capable of maintaining restraint under pressure and exercising independent judgment. 61
Team Competition
Sudo develops from an individual athlete into a dependable collaborator.
- Cooperated with Ishizaki during the scavenger race, cavalry battle, and relay at the Sports Festival. 68
- Served as Class D's fourth relay runner and overtook the leader shortly before the finish. 68
- Worked with Ishizaki on resource-allocation projections for the Comprehensive Ability Assessment Test. 80 81
- Participated as one of Class D's affirmative debaters in the Class Joint Debate Tournament. 69
Statement-of-Fact Mode
Sudo can rely on direct personal testimony and factual experiences rather than fabricated claims.
- Horikita selected him for the debate team because he had repeatedly countered pressure through restraint and facts. 69
- His refusal to fabricate a statement during Silent Offense and Defense was later cited as an example of Statement-of-Fact Mode. 81
Equipment / Items
- Sports drinks — A recurring symbol of his bonds with Kanzaki and Ishizaki; he exchanges them with both after major turning points. 21 51 52
- Protein powder — Bought as repayment to Ishizaki for correcting gym postures that could have injured Sudo's joints. 73
- Scavenger-race card — Keeps the sweat-creased card reading “Borrow Ishizaki Daichi” years after the Sports Festival. 68 84
- Letter to himself — Contains three resolutions: not to fight, not to be expelled, and not to let down his teammates. 74
Relationships
- Kanzaki Toru — Ally and early source of support. Kanzaki helps Yoshida after Sudo raises the alarm, accepts Sudo's offer of mutual assistance, and supports him without dismissing his anger during Ryuen's provocation. 4 9 21
- Yoshida — Athletic friend and fellow member of Class D's sports-oriented group. Sudo embellishes Yoshida's clash with the second-years and trains with him. 4 9
- Horikita Suzune — Classmate and strategist who initially pressures Sudo to recognize Ryuen's trap; later identifies him as a defensive core and selects him for Class D's debate team. 16 61 69
- Ishizaki Daichi — Former adversary whose involvement in Ryuen's scheme helped target Sudo. They rebuild trust through shared competition, transfer into the same class, and remain close through graduation. 21 51 63 85
- Kondo — Basketball-club acquaintance from Class C who approached Sudo under Ryuen's direction. Sudo later defeats him in the physical confrontation event. 13 51
- Ryuen Kakeru — Primary antagonist in Sudo's early arc. Ryuen attempted to provoke Sudo into violence and later sought to weaponize his prior disciplinary record. 21 32 33
- Kushida Kikyo — Earns Sudo's trust through small acts of kindness, including giving him a sports drink before a physical-fitness test. 35
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ryuen's Provocation Scheme
Sudo's temper and athletic value make him an ideal target for Class C. Kondo and Ishizaki cultivate contact with him, while Ryuen seeks to lure him into an incident severe enough to damage or expel him from Class D. 13 16
Refusal to Fight
At his breaking point, Sudo confronts Class C but refuses to strike anyone despite being mocked and surrounded. This denies Ryuen the evidence needed to remove him and marks the beginning of Sudo's emotional growth. 21
Reconciliation with Ishizaki
After their conflict, Sudo and Ishizaki gradually establish mutual trust. Their reconciliation is expressed less through conversation than joint work, competition, and repeated sharing of sports drinks. 51 53 68
Class D's Physical Core
Sudo wins Class D's physical confrontation against Kondo, functions as the center of the cavalry-battle defense, and serves as a key relay runner during the Sports Festival. 51 68
Debate Representative
Though initially convinced he “can't debate,” Sudo gives Class D's closing statement in the final special exam. He explains how learning restraint allowed him to become someone who could protect teammates and defend himself through rules. 69
Graduation
By graduation, Sudo and Ishizaki stand together as longtime partners. Sudo intends to study athletic training science and become a PE teacher, while Ishizaki says he intends to follow the same path and hire Sudo as his assistant. 85
Notable Quotes
“I'm not fighting.” 21
“First time I've felt that holding back hurts more than fighting.” 21
“Don't fight again this semester. Don't get expelled again. Don't let your teammates down again.” 74
Trivia
- Sudo was the first student to voluntarily raise his hand in a second-year homeroom meeting to ask about an Old System clause. 76
- He initially misunderstood Self-Reverse Evaluation, but later acknowledged that he and Ishizaki had been “guessing blindly” in their earlier resource projections. 80
- He preserves the scavenger-race card that paired him with Ishizaki and later says that, in a future Sports Festival, he will write Ishizaki's name himself. 84
