Background / History
Tang San grew up in Holy Soul Village as Tang Hao's son. Even as a child, he secretly cultivated techniques from his previous life, including the Mysterious Heaven Skill and Purple Demon Eye. His exceptional speed and physical techniques already rivaled a level-nineteen assassin despite his young age 31 59.
At his martial soul awakening, Tang San manifested Blue Silver Grass. Su Yuntao deemed it useless and initially refused to test him, but Tang San persisted until the crystal revealed his innate full soul power 8 9. His second martial soul, the Clear Sky Hammer, remained hidden until the Grandmaster deduced that he possessed Twin Martial Souls 64.
Tang San initially feared Jiang Chen because of the latter's corpse poison and violent reputation. Their relationship gradually shifted into a difficult friendship and rivalry through cooking, blacksmithing, training, and repeated spars 2 26 38 39. He became the Grandmaster's disciple after the latter identified his Twin Martial Souls, treating the teacher-student bond with filial seriousness 64.
At Nuoding Academy, Tang San obtained his first soul ring and Blue Silver Grass's Binding ability. His early rematches with Jiang Chen exposed the limits of his physical strength and Blue Silver Grass, leading him to rely more heavily on Tang Sect techniques and hidden weapons 93 95.
During the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Tang San became Shrek's battlefield leader. After breaking through to Soul Ancestor, he used his fourth soul skill and Clear Sky Hammer to help Shrek decisively defeat the Star Luo Royal Team 670 673. Although Martial Soul Hall Academy ultimately won the tournament, Tang San declared Jiang Chen the goal he would surpass 714.
After separating from Shrek, Tang San underwent harsh training, emerged from Slaughter City, and later reunited with his companions at level 60. Learning of Ah Yin's sacrifice, his family's suffering, and the Clear Sky Sect's tragedy hardened his resolve to destroy Spirit Hall 765 872 875.
Tang San pursued the Sea God's inheritance at Sea God Island, triggering the Sea God's Nine Trials and acquiring the Heart of the Sea God and Sea God's Trident 910 917. His power later rose from Soul Emperor to Titled Douluo within a year 944.
As a Titled Douluo, Tang San led the Shrek Seven Monsters into Slaughter City intending to eradicate it. He later discovered that the Slaughter King was Tang Chen—his own great-grandfather—and was horrified that his attack had mortally wounded him 954 960 978.
After reaching godhood with Xiao Wu, Tang San attacked Spirit City to avenge his family and sect. He stopped Xiao Wu from striking civilians, admitting guilt over the deaths caused when he previously left Slaughter City's Fallen Ones behind 1091. Forced from the continent during the battle, he escaped to the God Realm but lost an arm to Jiang Chen's attack 1110 1111.
In the God Realm, Tang San seeks a way to return to Douluo Continent and pursue revenge. The High Priest later reveals that Tang San's growth was tied to Poseidon's flesh and blood, then seals Tang San's divine power and attempts to consume him 1125 1158 1159.
Appearance
Tang San begins as a thin, physically weak-looking village boy, contrasting with Jiang Chen's sturdier build 2. In later years, he becomes a tall, striking young man with blue hair, an elegant bearing, and a noble appearance that makes him seem like high-born nobility 871 909.
- Blue hair in his later appearance 871 909
- Carries the Sea God's Trident on his back after obtaining it 942
- Wields a black Clear Sky Hammer marked with intricate white patterns when using Divine Slaughter's Domain 872
- Lost an arm while escaping from Douluo Continent, though he later regrew it with divine power 1111 1125
Personality
Tang San is resilient, proud, and intensely secretive about the techniques he brought from his previous life. He reacts sharply when his cultivation secrets are endangered and keeps hidden weapons ready when he believes someone has uncovered his identity or abilities 59 64.
He is analytical in battle and readily adapts tactics to stronger opponents. As Shrek's leader, he coordinates allies, identifies enemy weaknesses, and maintains his teammates' morale when they face superior foes 671 673 675.
His independence is central to his ambitions. He refuses recruitment by major factions because he will not live under another power and intends to restore the Tang Sect himself 685. This determination can become ruthlessness: he kills hostile Spirit Hall members without mercy and initially prioritizes pursuing Jiang Chen over containing Slaughter City's escaped Fallen Ones 953 964.
Despite this, Tang San is capable of remorse and restraint. He prevents Xiao Wu from harming civilians in Spirit City and acknowledges guilt over the civilian casualties connected to Slaughter City 1091.
