Background / History

During the Nine-Tails' attack on Konoha, Minato used the Dead Demon Consuming Seal and sacrificed his life. Before the Shinigami could consume him, Sasuke's Soul Space intercepted and imprisoned Minato's soul; the Yin half of the Nine-Tails remained bound to him through the sealing technique. 2 5 43

Inside the Soul Space, Minato quickly realized that he was not in the Pure Land. He questioned the self-styled “Warden,” attempted to strike Sasuke's phantom body with a kunai, and tried to determine the captor's motives without compromising Konoha. His composure broke when Sasuke used Kushina's imprisonment and chakra restriction as leverage. 3 4

Sasuke later told Minato that Kushina could have survived the Nine-Tails' extraction if Kurama had been resealed before her life force faded. Confirming the truth through the Yin Nine-Tails left Minato devastated by his decision to reject Kushina's request to reseal the beast into her. 5

While forced to watch Konoha's post-attack leadership meetings, Minato learned of Danzo's hostility toward him, the plan to conceal Naruto's parentage, and the possibility that Naruto could be treated as a tool. His confidence in Hiruzen Sarutobi and the village's leadership steadily deteriorated. 10 11 12 27

To secure Kushina's reunion and remain able to watch Naruto grow, Minato granted Sasuke all of his abilities and knowledge except the Nine-Tails. In return, Sasuke agreed not to harm Naruto, to permit Minato and Kushina to observe him, and to protect Naruto when necessary. 12 13

Minato later persuaded Kakashi to surrender his abilities for a chance at resurrection, begging Sasuke to preserve Kakashi's memories. Kakashi was revived, and Minato continued to encourage him to live long enough to uncover the truth about Obito. 28 29

Years of watching Naruto suffer prejudice and neglect intensified Minato's resentment. His suppressed anger caused the Yin Nine-Tails' chakra to manifest around his soul, after which he began considering whether gaining control of Kurama could provide leverage against Sasuke. 42 43 44

His greatest priority is his family. Kushina's distress provokes his anger, Naruto's treatment leaves him helpless and guilt-ridden, and he willingly surrenders his abilities to remain with Kushina and watch over their son. 3 12 13 16

As a former Hokage, Minato initially gives Hiruzen and Konoha's leadership the benefit of the doubt.
