Background and History

Founding legacy

Konoha was founded by the First Hokage, whose establishment of the village ended the Warring States period. The Second Hokage later died while covering the retreat of his disciples, including the future Third Hokage. 31

The village’s military strength was severely diminished before the current war. Hatake Sakumo, the “White Fang of the Leaf,” died by suicide after public condemnation for abandoning a mission to save his comrades; his loss removed one of Konoha’s most feared frontline fighters. 12

Decline of senior combat power

By the Third Shinobi World War, Konoha faces a shortage of high-level shinobi:

• Hiruzen Sarutobi is older and remains in the village. 24
• Hatake Sakumo is dead. 12 24
• Tsunade has left Konoha. 24
• Jiraiya had been traveling outside the village before returning during the war. 12 20
• Orochimaru had withdrawn from village affairs until the war compelled his deployment. 5 24

Third Shinobi World War

The war began in Konoha Year 47 after the Third Kazekage disappeared. Sunagakure accused Konoha of harming him and used the claim to declare war, seeking to divert its own internal crisis. 5

Konoha subsequently faced pressure on multiple fronts:

• Sunagakure — Conducted the primary campaign in the Land of Wind and repeatedly infiltrated behind Konoha’s defensive lines. 5 20
• Iwagakure — Massed troops along the Land of Fire border and later reinforced the Land of Grass. 5 39
• Kumogakure — Massed troops along the border, invaded the Land of Fire, and later sent reinforcements toward the Land of Fields. 5 39
• Kirigakure — Began sending vanguard units to probe Konoha. 5 12

Land of Wind front

Hiruzen ordered Orochimaru to take command of Konoha’s forces in the Land of Wind. Orochimaru’s arrival was so intimidating that Sunagakure moved its camp twenty kilometers overnight. 6 12

Before Orochimaru arrived, Nara Shikaku commanded the Land of Wind front and successfully prevented its collapse, but lacked the personal combat strength to decisively break the Sand forces. 12

Defense and Military Operations

Defensive line and outposts

Konoha established its defensive line in the Land of Rivers, with stationed ninja and outposts reporting on infiltrator activity. 24

Sunagakure’s infiltrators operated between this line and the Land of Fire. Their scattered formations, varying squad sizes, and brain-embedded curse seals made their purpose difficult to determine through interrogation. 20

Search operations

Orochimaru organized a three-direction search operation to eliminate Sand infiltrators:

• Jiraiya searched north from the main camp.
• Nara Shikaku searched east.
• Namikaze Minato searched south.
• Regional outposts were ordered to support the operations. 21

Konoha also avoided pursuing Sand forces into the Land of Rain when doing so could escalate tensions with that country. 18

Guchuan Gorge incident

During Sunagakure’s offensive, the Fourth Kazekage Rasa led a force through Guchuan Gorge in an attempt to surprise-attack Konoha’s base camp. Sen Chisato redirected a Konoha surprise-attack unit to intercept the force. 41

The resulting battle exposed a weakness in Rasa’s Gold Sand Magnet Release: coordinated Fire Style and Wind Style attacks could melt and reshape the Gold Sand, causing portions to slip beyond his control. 42 43
