Background

Tsunade returns to Konoha during the Second Shinobi World War after participating in the campaign against the Mist Ninja alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru. She reports that their side has defeated the Mist forces and is preparing for deployment to the Land of Rain. She also credits Hatake Sakumo as the campaign’s most formidable combatant. 32

At twenty-seven, Tsunade is one of the last remaining members of the Senju Clan alongside her younger brother, Nawaki. Uzumaki Mito warns her that this status and her perceived suitability for the Hokage position make her vulnerable to Konoha’s internal political struggles; Tsunade initially dismisses these concerns and states that she has no interest in becoming Hokage. 32

When Uchiha Kurohane meets her through Kushina, he asks to study medical ninjutsu under her. Though moved by his stated wish to save others, Tsunade does not immediately accept him as an apprentice. Instead, she gives him ten substantial medical texts and instructs him to develop his chakra control through exercises such as tree-climbing and water-walking. 33 34

She has a strong moral code and little patience for political excuses. After hearing that Aburame Ryoma and his companions had harmed Kushina and Yakushi Nonō, she judges their injuries as deserved consequences and criticizes the Ninja Academy for producing students capable of such conduct. 42

Despite her bluntness, Tsunade is affected by sincere admiration. Kurohane’s praise for her work as a medical ninja leaves her surprised, flattered, and more favorably disposed toward him than she had been at their first meeting. 33 34
