Background

Neji was born into the Hyuga Clan's branch family and bears the Caged Bird seal on his forehead. The seal can inflict unbearable pain should he resist, leaving him convinced that his life has been determined by birth. He sees himself as an eagle trapped in a cage. 8 10 16

His father, Hizashi Hyuga, died in connection with Hinata's abduction by ninja from the Land of Lightning. Neji resents that, despite his superior talent, he is bound to serve Hinata—the main-house heir—and is required to train with her as a sparring partner. 8 9

Personality

Initially, Neji is proud, severe, and deeply fatalistic. He dismisses Takasaki as a “dead-last” whose effort cannot change his predetermined future, a belief rooted in Neji's own bondage to the branch family and the Caged Bird seal. 10

Despite his resentment, Neji is conscientious about his duties toward Hinata. He worries when she is late for training, fears the consequences if she is endangered, and accepts responsibility for his own conduct after attacking Takasaki. 9 11

When Hinata delays their sparring session to teach Takasaki, Neji investigates her unusual “guest” and finds the class dead-last in the Hyuga estate. He condemns Takasaki as incapable of learning ninjutsu and argues that fate cannot be changed. 8 9 10

The argument escalates when Takasaki challenges Neji's acceptance of the Caged Bird seal. Neji attacks him with the Eight Trigrams Palm, only to learn that Takasaki escaped through the Substitution Technique and had also used Transformation and Clone Techniques to deceive him. 10 11

Reconsidering Fate

Takasaki's unexpected abilities make Neji doubt his long-held belief that a person's birth fixes their future. Hinata's enhanced performance against him further reinforces the idea that strength can be gained through effort or outside influence. 11 13 14

Neji comes to believe that Takasaki may hold the answer to breaking the Caged Bird seal. Although Takasaki admits no actual method, Neji clings to the possibility and chooses to maintain their alliance. 15 20
