Background / History

Sakumo is Kakashi Hatake's father and the wielder of the famed short blade White Fang. Although Lihuo initially perceives him as an unfathomably powerful shinobi, Sakumo proves to be humble and approachable: he welcomes Lihuo into the Hatake home, cooks for the boys, accepts a gift of blade oil, and offers to guide Lihuo's training 13.

He becomes one of Lihuo's most important mentors. Sakumo openly identifies flaws in Lihuo's combat approach, provides repeated instruction at the Hatake residence, and praises his unusually rapid growth. Even when Lihuo can endure more than a dozen exchanges against him, Sakumo remains overwhelmingly stronger when fighting seriously 19 22.

After returning from a mission, Sakumo advises Kakashi and Lihuo over dinner. He recognizes Orochimaru as a capable teacher but warns Lihuo that Orochimaru never acts without profit, demonstrating his concern for the younger shinobi's safety 35. Before Lihuo departs for Sunagakure, Sakumo lends him White Fang—not primarily for use, but as a warning that anyone targeting Lihuo may incur the White Fang's retaliation 36.

Sakumo's border successes make him a celebrated Konoha hero and a potential Hokage candidate in public opinion. His growing acclaim draws Danzō's jealousy and sets Root's conspiracy against him in motion 35 79.

Personality

Sakumo is modest despite his reputation. He has no airs around Lihuo, treats him like family, and patiently shares his knowledge of swordsmanship and ninjutsu 13 19 35.

His defining principle is protecting comrades. When Lihuo asks whether he would choose a mission or his teammates' lives, Sakumo chooses his comrades, even while acknowledging that he would accept blame for the consequences and atone if necessary 80.

Root's betrayal strains his faith in Konoha. After discovering that Root deliberately sabotaged his mission and targeted him for death, Sakumo begins questioning the village he had loyally served. He later conceals both Root's involvement and Lihuo's assistance from the Third Hokage 84 85.

Root Conspiracy and the Puppetmaster Mission

During an S-rank mission to intercept Sunagakure's puppetmaster unit, Sakumo's team is ambushed after their location is exposed. He contacts Lihuo through the Flying Thunder God Kunai when a teammate is critically wounded 81 83.

Lihuo stabilizes Saki, while Sakumo and Lihuo discover that Root operatives murdered the Sand unit and intended to ensure Sakumo's failure. Sakumo initially insists that they cannot kill Root directly, but agrees to stage the scene as a Sand-on-Root clash after Lihuo explains the political necessity 83 84.

When Sakumo discovers Kamui's weaknesses, he attempts to commit suicide rather than endanger Lihuo's secret. Lihuo stops him, affirming that Sakumo is someone he trusts 84. Sakumo subsequently lies to the Third Hokage about the mission for the first time, concealing both Root and Lihuo 85.

Political Exile to the Land of Lightning

After Danzō's downfall, Sakumo is formally promoted to Deputy Director of the Anbu and commander of the Land of Lightning border forces. He understands that the appointment is also a transfer away from Konoha's center of power 90.

When Kumogakure escalates the conflict with tailed beasts, Sakumo accepts command despite his history with Hiruzen and leads Konoha's response 102.

Battle Against the Two-Tails

Sakumo and Minato uncover Kumogakure's decoy force and realize that the Eight-Tails and Two-Tails are the true threats. After Minato is badly injured redirecting an Eight-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb, Sakumo orders him to organize the sealing operation while he delays the Two-Tails 105 106.

Sakumo fights Matatabi and the surrounding Cloud Ninja alone, killing numerous opponents and wounding the tailed beast before Lihuo arrives to restrain it with Adamantine Sealing Chains 107.
