Structure and Environment
| Region / Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Five primary layers | Purgatory was originally described as a world divided into five layers. 226 |
| First Realm | The Heavenly Ban stood above this uppermost realm; historically, True Gods could leave Purgatory only by crossing it. 628 722 |
| Fifth Realm | A lower realm dense with turbid alien energy and demonic essence. Foreign races were driven here after humanity gained control of Purgatory. 250 730 |
| Sixth Realm | A realm beneath the Fifth Realm, once filled with filthy alien energy. 662 926 |
| Seventh Realm | The deepest known realm: a lightless, cold, desolate void where even divine consciousness struggles to spread. 662 684 |
| Boundary Walls | Barriers surrounding Purgatory that once impeded entry and exit, even for many Realm Gods. 342 737 |
| Heavenly Ban / Heavenly Restriction | The world’s overhead protective law, which restricted departure and shielded Purgatory from external forces. 593 604 |
Purgatory contains both heaven-and-earth spiritual energy and tainted alien power. These two forces sustain different cultivation paths and populations: human cultivation is associated with spiritual energy, while foreign races and demon races draw strength from turbid power. 625 629
History
In its earliest known eras, Purgatory was ruled by the Ancient Demon Race. Foreign races—including the Celestial Clan, Cyclopes, Flame Clan, and Radiant Clan—later displaced them. Humanity, initially physically weak and without bloodlines, developed a cultivation system based on spiritual energy, produced True Gods, and eventually replaced the foreign races as Purgatory’s dominant power. 536 604
After humanity’s rise, its rulers forced many foreign races into the Fifth Realm to limit their communication with the alien gods they worshipped. Humanity had controlled Purgatory for roughly thirty thousand years by the time of the current great calamity. 250 666
Purgatory was once sealed and hidden from the awareness of external gods. Its sudden reappearance allowed alien gods to detect it through ruined altars, statues, and other objects of worship, reigniting outside interest in the world. 243
Openings and Restrictions
Purgatory’s Opening
Purgatory undergoes a major opening once every hundred thousand years. The approach of an opening is marked by an increase in geniuses, accelerated breakthroughs, strange phenomena, and the emergence of dangerous beings. 372
During these periods, external gods can more easily observe Purgatory through altars and vessels, while hidden races and powers emerge to compete for influence. The resulting slaughter, calamity, and instability are believed to produce exceptional powerhouses. 372 463
Departure and Entry
- Historically, True Gods could leave through the Heavenly Ban, but doing so exposed them to gods waiting beyond Purgatory to hunt them. 372
- Those who became Demon Gods through turbid alien power were barred from leaving through the Heavenly Ban. 628
- As Purgatory’s laws changed, Immortal Realm cultivators and level-nine foreign-race warriors began gaining ways to travel between realms. 663 727
- Before the final transformation, Purgatory’s Boundary Wall restricted many outside Realm Gods from entering even with Realm God Plates. 736 737
- The Boundary Walls and Heavenly Ban ultimately vanished, removing the old confinement on Purgatory’s inhabitants. 1005
Providence and Divine Positions
Providence is a mysterious substance found only in worlds bearing the character “Prison.” It can condense souls into tangible form and is regarded as the vital essence of such worlds. 572
Purgatory’s providence enabled human cultivators to become True Gods whose divine souls gained substance. The extraordinary strength of Purgatory’s human gods, including their past destruction of the Hall of Gods, made providence a coveted resource among external gods and Sovereigns. 572 641
- The number and strength of human cultivators, together with Purgatory’s spiritual energy, influence the fortune available for human True Gods. 625
- Turbid alien energy similarly affects the potential number of high-level foreign-race and demon-race powerhouses. 625
- Purgatory was considered the strongest prison-character world of its era. 572
- The world had fifteen True God positions in the present era, compared with fewer than eight in an earlier age. 653
Reincarnation System
Purgatory once possessed underground palaces and a Reincarnation Pool that received the souls of the dead. Souls were cleansed of memories and karma before being used in the birth of new life, forming a complete reincarnation cycle. 741
The human Ghost Sacrifice Sect later took control of this system. Its True Gods repeatedly disrupted the original cycle, leading to growing problems in karmic reincarnation. 741
Associated Artifact
Purgatory Gate
The Purgatory Gate is a bronze plate and the symbol of a Purgatory Realm God’s identity. Its full name reappeared after it absorbed spatial rifts in the Cloud Thunder Forbidden Land. 226 529
- It can establish coordinates and open spatial passages connected to Purgatory. 243 568
- After Pang Jian explored Dark Prison and Thunder Prison, the plate gained additional “Dark” and “Thunder” markings. 573 703
- It can connect Purgatory with other prison-character worlds and serves as a key tool for Realm God travel. 666 722
- The artifact can revive fallen level-ten Demon Gods through essence blood. 529
Role in the Divine Conflict
Purgatory’s providence, human True Gods, ancient relics, and restrictive laws made it a target for gods, Sovereigns, and Realm Gods from beyond the Ghost Mist. External powers sought to enter it for its resources, divine positions, the World Tree, and the secrets behind humanity’s rise. 572 737 808
When the Hall of Gods descended to destroy Purgatory’s Heavenly Restriction, Pang Jian entered the restriction and used the world’s Metal Dao Source, Soul Dao Source, spiritual energy, and alien power to resist the assault. His defense led Purgatory’s inhabitants to recognize him as the world’s guardian. 910 911
The final collapse of Purgatory’s Boundary Walls and heavenly canopy did not flood the world with Ghost Mist. Instead, Purgatory and the other Purgatory realms opened onto a void beyond their former cages, giving their inhabitants a path into a larger starry sky. 1005 1006
