History

Conflict with Amegakure and Konoha

Sunagakure fought Amegakure through numerous small-scale engagements in the Land of Rain. Intelligence recorded twenty-five clashes, while major figures such as Chiyo and the Third Kazekage had not yet entered the field. 4 Amegakure ultimately defeated Sunagakure, forcing the Sand Village to withdraw to the Land of Wind. 7

Despite this setback, Sunagakure prepared a surprise attack on Konoha under Kōno's leadership. Kōno and Bunpuku led Sand forces into the Land of Fire, where Kōno fought Hiruzen Sarutobi with Sand Iron techniques. Leaf reinforcements eventually compelled the Sand forces to retreat. 9 18 The conflict continued through smaller village-versus-village engagements before settling into a stalemate. 21

Disappearance of the Third Kazekage

Kōno disappeared amid a period of international instability, leading Sunagakure to conduct a large-scale internal search and begin selecting a new Kazekage. 91 Chiyo and Ebizo privately paid a substantial political price to prevent Sasori's involvement in the disappearance from becoming public, surrendering their influence and retiring afterward. 90

The crisis exposed Sunagakure's vulnerability: Bunpuku declined nomination for Kazekage, leaving Rasa, Ao, and Kikumoto Taira as the principal candidates. 91 The later deaths of Ao and Kitajima during Cloud Village's invasion left Rasa as the uncontested choice for Fourth Kazekage. 100

Cloud Village Invasion

Cloud Village invaded the Land of Wind to seize Sunagakure's newly valuable gold resources. Its forces advanced along three routes: Troy's unit targeted the mines, Ay's unit disrupted intelligence and communications, and the Third Raikage led the direct assault on Sunagakure itself. 94

Yugito Nii used Tailed Beast Bombs to breach the village's defenses, causing severe destruction and casualties. 97 Rasa resisted the Third Raikage with large-scale Gold Sand techniques, including the Magnet Release Secret Technique: Great Sand Burial Seal, but could not decisively defeat him. 99 Cloud Village ultimately withdrew with substantial gold and metallic minerals, while destroying or reburying resources it could not carry away. 100

Seven-Tails Program and Konoha Alliance

After the Cloud invasion, Rasa pursued additional deterrence through a secret plan to obtain the Seven-Tails. Sunagakure concealed the beast's acquisition and began screening shinobi between the ages of ten and fifteen for compatibility. 169

The first selection round drew five hundred candidates, of whom one hundred advanced; only seven passed the genjutsu-based second trial. 171 Ye Yu was eventually chosen as the Seven-Tails Jinchūriki and trained under Bunpuku, rapidly improving his control over the Tailed Beast's chakra. 191

Seeking protection from further invasions, Sunagakure concluded a one-year defense agreement with Konoha. Sunagakure paid thirty tons of gold in return for at least one thousand Leaf shinobi, including one hundred Jonin, to defend against incoming enemies. 169

Mist and Stone Invasions

Kirigakure later infiltrated Sunagakure by replacing outposts with disguised Mist shinobi. The Seven Ninja Swordsmen, Kaguya forces, Yagura, Utakata, and thousands of Mist shinobi participated in the operation. 195 Yagura and Utakata attempted to devastate the village with Tailed Beast Bombs, targeting civilians as well as shinobi. 202

Ye Yu revealed himself during the defense and helped force the Mist Village into retreat. He subsequently rescued Bunpuku after the One-Tails Jinchūriki was captured. 206 Iwagakure exploited the chaos by attacking Sunagakure's borders and gold mines with Roshi and Han, while Root covertly entered the conflict under the pretense of supporting its Sand ally. 207 209

Sunagakure chose not to pursue Kirigakure after the Mist withdrawal, instead prioritizing reconstruction. Iwagakure escaped with major mineral deposits, including approximately eight hundred tons of gold. 212

Reconstruction

The combined invasions inflicted catastrophic losses: Sunagakure lost more than ten thousand shinobi and suffered extensive damage throughout the village. 224 Financial reserves from gold mining allowed reconstruction to proceed quickly, but replacing the dead shinobi remained a long-term problem. 224 235

Rasa later dispatched Ye Yu to support Konoha against the Cloud, Stone, and Mist Villages, limiting Sand assistance to a single Jinchūriki because Sunagakure remained vulnerable. 224 Afterward, Rasa refused Konoha's gift of twenty tons of gold, judging that preserving Konoha's sense of obligation was more valuable than immediate payment. 235
