First Hokage

Hashirama was Konoha's founding Hokage and its foremost stabilizing force. When Doctor Toji first entered the village, Hashirama personally welcomed him into the Senju Compound after hearing of his reputation during a trip near Tanzaku Town 3.

He favored judging people by their actions rather than suspicions about their hidden motives. After Toji saved Senju Touka's arm, Hashirama praised Toji's Yang Release affinity, ordered Tobirama to learn Medical Ninjutsu from him, and argued that good deeds should not be dismissed merely because a person's heart could not be known 5.

Village Reforms

Hashirama used his authority to move Konoha beyond its clan-based Warring States structure. He granted Toji land, encouraged him to establish the Zenin Clan in Konoha, and publicly supported his medical work 7.

When the clans resisted Toji's proposal for a centralized hospital, Hashirama committed all Senju medical ninja to the project, appointed Toji as Gospel Hospital's first director, and built the hospital complex himself with Wood Release 8. He later mandated village-wide Ninja Academy education despite clan fears that it would weaken clan loyalty 11.

His foreign policy followed the same idealism. Rather than retaliate against Kumogakure after its failed attempt to seize the Nine-Tails, he ordered Konoha to offer medical aid 10. Following his battle with Madara, he captured the Tailed Beasts and planned to distribute them among other villages to deter future wars through balance of power 64 70.

Senjutsu Training and Prophecy

Hashirama temporarily left Tobirama in charge of Konoha to train at Shikkotsu Forest after Sage Katsuyu summoned him 36 37. Katsuyu warned him of an overwhelming future enemy, foretold his death, and revealed that another person would one day possess Wood Release 37.

He accepted the prospect of death calmly, but the prophecy of another Wood Release user deeply moved him. Hashirama hoped this future wielder would be a Senju descendant and proof that his clan could endure after him 37 43.

Battle of the Valley of the End

When Madara returned with the Nine-Tails under Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan control, Hashirama insisted on facing him alone at the Valley of the End 56 58. He attempted repeatedly to persuade Madara to abandon his path before using overwhelming force to protect nearby settlements and subdue the Nine-Tails 58.

After fighting Madara for a full day and night, Hashirama used a Wood Clone feint to ambush and fatally wound him. He mourned Madara in silence, secretly buried him in the valley, and concealed the grave from Tobirama to prevent Madara's body from being used for experimentation 59.

Decline and Death

Though Hashirama survived the battle, his death was not caused by depleted physical energy. Toji concluded that killing Madara—the person closest to him—left Hashirama with irreversible spiritual and emotional damage 63.

Hashirama spent his remaining years preparing Konoha for his absence. He named Tobirama as successor, asked Mito to become the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki after his death, and continued advocating restraint toward the Uchiha 56 63.

He collapsed suddenly seven years after the Valley of the End battle. Before dying, he entrusted Konoha to Tobirama, reaffirmed his ban on forbidden experimentation, gave Tsunade a chakra-infused protective necklace, and died at sunset while thinking of Madara 101.

Personality

Hashirama was warm, trusting, and openly emotional. He believed peace required cooperation, institutional reform, and a willingness to recognize good actions even in people others feared 5 8 70.

His kindness did not mean indecision. He forcibly imposed the hospital and Academy reforms when clan interests threatened Konoha's future, and he sentenced Tobirama to confinement after discovering his human experimentation 8 11 23.

He carried intense affection for both family and friends. His grief over Madara's death ultimately destroyed his spiritual vitality, even though he had chosen to kill Madara for Konoha's safety 59 63. He also had a teasing, intrusive side, repeatedly trying to arrange a marriage between Toji and Uchiha Chiri 32 43.
