Background

Yan is a senior member of Spirit Hall's Golden Generation. When he first encounters Lin Ze'an, his reckless conduct offends Chrysanthemum Douluo, leaving him terrified under the elder's displeasure. He later visits Lin to apologize and brings housewarming gifts, beginning a more respectful relationship with his new junior. 10

Yan joins Hu Liena, Xie Yue, and Lin on their Sunset Forest training expedition. Although he initially assures Lin that the seniors will handle danger, he accepts Lin's leadership when the group encounters Poison Douluo's territory and follows the order to withdraw. 20 24

After Lin Gang's death, Yan helps Hu Liena try to comfort Lin. He later reveals that he was adopted by Spirit Hall and has no family of his own, giving him a personal understanding of Lin's uncertainty over suddenly discovering a great-grandfather. 31 34 35

Personality

Yan is initially arrogant and impulsive, but he is willing to acknowledge fault. After Little Sprout mistakes him for an intruder and suppresses him with vines, Yan dismisses the incident rather than blaming Lin. 20

He is protective of his companions, stepping in front of Lin when a Soul Ancestor attacks during the Sunset Forest ambush. He is also openly concerned for Lin's well-being, checking on him after the disturbance caused by Lin's breakthrough. 23 34
