Background / History

Yu Hezai accompanied Yu Hengqing to the Star Dou Forest to secure his second soul ring. He offered Yu Hengqing candied hawthorns during their journey and served as the expedition's experienced combatant and guide. 19

He and Yu Hengqing devised a trap for an approximately 1,100-year Thunder-Clap Bird: Yu Hezai drove the bird from its nest while Yu Hengqing used prepared bait to lure it into a net. Yu Hezai severely wounded the captured bird with Thunder Ring, but a soul-beast riot forced them to abandon the hunt and retreat. 20

During their escape, Yu Hezai shielded Yu Hengqing from Xiong Jun, refused to surrender him, and fought despite recognizing the vast disparity in strength. Yu Hengqing temporarily transferred spirit power to him, allowing Yu Hezai to launch a barrage of attacks, escape with Yu Hengqing, and delay Xiong Jun long enough to separate his cousin from the pursuit. 21

Yu Hezai was injured in the confrontation but returned to Yu Hengqing after Bi Ji treated him. He remained suspicious of Bi Ji and Di Tian, prioritized leaving the forest, and later accepted that he could not change the encounter through regret alone. 22 23

After Yu Hengqing chose to return alone to the Star Dou Forest, Yu Hezai agreed to notify Yu Yuanzhen and wait at Thunder Valley. There, he stayed with Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan while awaiting Yu Hengqing's return, helped establish camp ahead of thunderstorms, provided healing medicine for Yu Hengqing's lightning-tempering, and acted as referee for Yu Hengqing and Dugu Yan's sparring. 23 28 29

Yu Hezai later met Yu Zhantian, an ancestor of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. His claim to rank among the clan's top ten prompted Yu Zhantian to question the clan's present strength, as an 82nd-rank Spirit Douluo held such a high position. 32 33
