Background / History
Second Shinobi World War
Jiraiya entered the Land of Rain alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade, leading Konoha forces on the front line of the Second Shinobi World War. During the stalemate against Hanzō's salamander toxin, he proposed a suicidal charge to force a breakthrough; Orochimaru rejected the plan as futile. 6 10
He gathered intelligence for Konoha's operations, including information on an Amegakure supply route. False intelligence contributed to Orochimaru and Nawaki Senju entering a trapped supply depot, and Jiraiya blamed himself after Nawaki's death. 20 21
Jiraiya fought Hanzō alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. Though he was badly injured while shielding Tsunade from explosive kunai, the three combined their remaining strength against Hanzō; their survival and teamwork established their reputation as the Sannin. 29
Mentor to Uchiha Chiba
After the Sannin rescued the poisoned Uchiha Chiba from Hanzō, Jiraiya was impressed by Chiba's resolve to pursue peace and become Hokage. He and Orochimaru argued over taking Chiba as a disciple before Tsunade joined them; ultimately, the three became Chiba's shared mentors. 32 33 34
Jiraiya's instruction focused on infiltration, disguise, and transformation techniques. He also gave Chiba the S-rank Fire Release: Dragon Flame Song Technique during the campaign in the Land of Wind. 34 35
Training the Three Orphans
Following the war, Chiba asked Jiraiya to secretly mentor Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan in Amegakure while concealing that Chiba was alive. Jiraiya accepted, partly because Nagato's Rinnegan appeared connected to his own mission. 43
For three years, Jiraiya taught the children chakra refinement, ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, friendship, conviction, and the responsibility to protect others. He eventually left Amegakure after judging that they had grown capable of facing the future. 43
Later Events in Konoha
When Chiba admitted to killing Shimura Danzō, Jiraiya was initially shocked but accepted that Chiba had acted to protect himself and his companions. 73
During the Nine-Tails' rampage, Jiraiya organized civilian evacuations while Tsunade cleared escape routes and Orochimaru guarded key intersections. 76 77
At the subsequent council meeting, Jiraiya openly rejected the claim that Chiba had controlled the Nine-Tails, arguing that the Sharingan seen in the beast's eyes could not have belonged to his disciple. 79
Appearance
Jiraiya is recognized by his spiky white hair and typically practical shinobi attire suited to wartime travel and combat. 12
- Wears a straw raincoat while operating near Amegakure. 20
- Uses hand armor during battlefield preparations. 12
- Wore a conical hat while traveling through the Land of Rain. 43
Personality
Jiraiya despises war and is deeply affected by the broken homes, deaths, and suffering it causes. His outlook was shaped by his connection to Mount Myōboku and his desire to find someone capable of bringing change to the shinobi world. 33
Despite his casual humor and habit of acting like a pervert, he is emotionally vulnerable. Orochimaru notes that Jiraiya hides unrequited feelings behind that persona rather than confessing them directly. 6 7
He is protective and self-sacrificing in battle, notably using Lion Mane Jutsu to shield Tsunade from Hanzō's explosive attack even after his chakra was nearly exhausted. 29 As a teacher, he emphasizes protection, conviction, and using hardship to build a better future rather than merely pursuing power. 43
