Background / History

During the Second Shinobi World War, Tsunade served alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru as one of Hiruzen Sarutobi's disciples commanding Konoha forces on the Land of Rain front. She was especially concerned for her younger brother, Nawaki, whose desire to become Hokage had made him headstrong. 6

When Hanzo's salamander toxin stalled Konoha's invasion of Amegakure and overwhelmed its medical corps, Tsunade led the antidote research. Although Chiyo's antidote arrived first, Tsunade later produced an instantly effective antidote of her own, impressing even Chiyo. 9 10 12 30

Nawaki was killed during a mission undertaken with Orochimaru. Tsunade was devastated by his death, but remained on the battlefield. 20 21 She later fought Hanzo beside Jiraiya and Orochimaru; after recognizing their strength and resilience, Hanzo named the trio the Sannin of Konoha. 29

After the war, Tsunade proposed placing a medical ninja in every Konoha squad to improve survival rates. Hiruzen declined amid political instability, causing Tsunade to leave Konohagakure with Shizune.
