Background / History

Hanzo was a survivor of Amegakure's salamander experiments. He recalls being forced to kill repeatedly before a salamander venom sac was implanted in him, turning him into a secret weapon; his Right Hand was another survivor of those experiments. 8 9 19

As Amegakure's leader, Hanzo prepared to defend the Land of Rain against Konoha's invasion and personally commanded a force of 5,000 Rain ninja. His salamander toxin stalled Konoha's advance for more than a week before antidotes were developed. 3 10 12

After Amegakure ninja rescued the badly wounded Uchiha Chiba, Hanzo deliberately implanted him with a controlled, hundred-fold concentration of salamander toxin. The toxin would repair Chiba's shattered dantian and grant poison resistance, but Chiba would die unless he learned Hanzo's ninjutsu during the recovery period. Hanzo then named him his personal disciple. 8 9

Hanzo trained Chiba in kusarigama combat, taijutsu, and Bushido, then took him onto the battlefield. He protected Chiba from the Root operative Hannya and allowed him to pursue the poisoned attacker. 10 11 13

Following the death of his daughter, Katsuzuki, Hanzo vowed to dismantle Danzo's Twelve Root Members. He demanded that Chiba give his life if Hanzo ever called for it, accepting Chiba's agreement as the price of Katsuzuki having saved him. 28

Hanzo anticipated Konoha's attempt to strike Amegakure from the sea and defeated Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru with his Rain ninja and salamander's poisonous mist. Impressed by their resilience, he spared them and gave them the name “the Sannin of Konoha.” 29

After withdrawing from the Konoha front, Hanzo announced his intent to declare war on every nation. When Chiba opposed this decision, Hanzo publicly branded him a Konoha Uchiha assassin, ordered his capture or death, and later pursued him toward Konoha's forces. Privately, Hanzo stated that Konoha could provide Chiba with resources he could not. 30 32

Hanzo is a pale-yellow-haired man who conceals much of his face behind a respirator-like breathing mask. His hands are scarred from his past and his combat style centers on a chained sickle. 3 9 19

Personality

Hanzo reveres strength and rejects rigid hierarchy among the strong; he openly accepts the possibility that a disciple might someday kill and replace him. This belief drives his interest in Chiba, whom he views as a “wolf cub” resembling his younger self. 8 9

Despite his fearsome reputation, Hanzo claims that his ultimate goal is peace and prosperity for Amegakure: a Land of Rain no longer used as a battlefield by the Five Great Nations. He is willing to use poison, misinformation, and war to achieve that goal. 19 20

His affection for Chiba and concern for his village are repeatedly undercut by ruthless decisions. He worries that Amegakure cannot offer Chiba the resources he needs, yet drives him out as an assassin after Chiba challenges his plan for wider war. 16 30
