Appearance
Iwagakure is built deep within the Land of Earth amid treacherous, rocky terrain. Its architecture and landscape differ sharply from Konohagakure's, emphasizing exposed stone, towering peaks, and defensible elevation 146.
- Surrounded by mountains on three sides, creating natural defensive barriers. 146
- A costly straight road leads ordinary visitors directly to the main gate. 146
- Guard posts, deeper defensive lines, and barriers are positioned throughout the surrounding terrain to detect intruders early. 146
- Earth Release is the village's predominant elemental specialization. 210 434
Government and Internal Politics
Ōnoki's authority was effectively absolute during his tenure as Third Tsuchikage. Unlike Konoha's divided leadership, Iwagakure's major decisions rested with him; even senior figures generally obeyed once he made a final ruling. 198
- Ōnoki's succession plan — Ōnoki gradually entrusted Shōji with major responsibilities, privately selected him as successor, and later retired after Shōji became the Fourth Tsuchikage. 427 445
- Kamizuru Clan — Iwagakure's most influential established shinobi clan initially led resistance to accepting the Uchiha, fearing the loss of its status and interests. Its leader, Iwatetsu, ultimately supported Shōji after the Uchiha expanded the village's power and prosperity. 145 222 445
- Jōnin Squad — A central administrative and command body through which village orders are transmitted. Shōji was appointed its deputy leader shortly after the Uchiha migration. 157 160
- Unified command — During military campaigns, Ōnoki set strategic objectives while Kitsuchi, Ido, Shōji, and other senior ninja handled operational planning and execution. 201 203
History
Acceptance of the Uchiha Clan
When the Uchiha Clan fled Konohagakure, Shōji formally requested Iwagakure's protection on behalf of the clan. He argued that Iwagakure was their only viable option and offered the clan's Sharingan power, including three pairs of Mangekyō Sharingan, as a strategic asset. 131 132
Ōnoki accepted the proposal despite internal concerns. He viewed the arrangement as a direct gain for Iwagakure: Konoha would be weakened while Iwagakure acquired one of the Shinobi World's most formidable clans. 145
The Uchiha arrived under the escort of Kitsuchi and Akatsuchi. Iwagakure prepared a dedicated residential area, while the Uchiha chose to construct their compound in the village's own architectural style rather than preserve Konoha-style separation. 135 146 147
Uchiha Integration
Ōnoki actively integrated the Uchiha into village institutions. More than one hundred selected clan members became Iwagakure ninja soon after arriving, while others were placed in defense forces, border garrisons, high-level mission teams, and the Ninja Academy. 156 157
The Uchiha's performance in the war against Sunagakure rapidly changed public opinion. Within four months, Shōji's victories and the clan's frontline contributions earned them broad recognition as Iwagakure residents rather than outsiders. 235 246 251
Military Strength and Assets
Shinobi Forces
- Iwagakure recovered part of the manpower it lost during the Third Shinobi World War, when roughly one to two thousand ninja were killed or severely wounded and an elite Land of Fire strike force was destroyed. 198
- The Uchiha Clan's arrival not only replenished losses but substantially increased combat strength; Sharingan users were regarded as capable of fighting multiple ordinary opponents. 198
- Light-Weight Rock Technique users provide a limited aerial capability, though only a few hundred active Iwagakure ninja are able to use the technique. 357
- Iwagakure mobilized more than 3,000 ninja for its first major southern offensive against Sunagakure. 201 202
- Its later military force included the power of four Tailed Beasts, giving it a decisive advantage over the combined forces of Konoha, Sunagakure, and Kumogakure. 495
Chakra Armor
Chakra Armor became a major strategic project after Iwagakure pursued technological cooperation with the Land of Snow. The armor was costly and slow to manufacture, but its battlefield value made it central to the village's military development. 192 199
- The armor was credited with reducing Iwagakure casualties in later warfare. 457
- Other villages assessed Chakra Armor as capable of at least doubling Iwagakure's combat power. 457
- Shōji personally oversaw the distribution of new weapons and Chakra Armor after becoming Tsuchikage. 474
Strategic Resources
- Lanthanum Metal — Iwagakure's southern campaign prioritized securing the Land of Wind's lanthanum production site, a resource needed for Chakra Armor. The Northern Fortress was strategically useful but secondary to the metal deposits. 217 223
- Kusagakure manpower — Following the annexation of Kusagakure, seven to eight hundred former Kusa ninja were formally incorporated into Iwagakure's forces. 386
- Snow Country technology — Iwagakure sought closer relations with the Land of Snow to improve Chakra Armor production and establish a loyal forward strategic base. 192 195
