Background / History

Deidara was a ten-year-old disciple of Onoki who had effectively been driven to live outside Iwagakure because of his repeated explosions. His status as the Tsuchikage's student prevented the village from hunting him down, but he continued returning to cause explosive incidents—including destroying the village sewer. 37 38

Uchiha Yu sought him out before Akatsuki could recruit him. Yu convinced Deidara to travel to Konoha by claiming that the village admired his art, then protected him when Iwagakure ninja attempted to seize him after the sewer incident. 37 38

Akatsuki members Sasori and Hoshigaki Kisame attempted to take Deidara shortly afterward. Deidara rejected them, choosing Konoha because he believed its people appreciated his art. He fought beside Yu against Kisame, using Clay Birds to protect him, before Yu's Money Release forced the Akatsuki pair to withdraw. 39 40 41 42

Afterward, Onoki allowed Deidara to take refuge in Konoha for his safety. Yu introduced him to Uchiha Fugaku, and Deidara demonstrated the destructive force of a Clay Bird by leveling a nearby house. 42 43

Yu reclaimed the old Uchiha compound as a training ground and began drilling Deidara, Sasuke, and Naruto in real combat. Deidara later supported the Uchiha side during the ambush on Root remnants, using Clay Spiders to blow off Aburame Torune's legs. 44 47 48

Over the next five years, Deidara trained in secret with Sasuke and Naruto. Although he initially held a clear advantage over them, their rapid growth gradually forced him into defensive battles; by age fifteen, he was fighting at peak Chunin or near-Jonin level. 50

Personality

His enthusiasm for explosions is reckless and poorly suited to public events; merely hearing about possible sabotage at Fugaku's inauguration makes him want to create an explosion himself. Yu has to talk him out of it. 46

Despite his arrogance, Deidara has a compassionate side. At this point, he deliberately limits his explosions to avoid killing Iwagakure ninja, and he becomes frantic when Kisame severely injures Yu. 38 41
