Background / History

Tsunade is the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju and the publicly known last descendant of the Senju Clan. Her grandmother was Mito Uzumaki, the first Nine-Tails jinchūriki; through her mother, Tsunade is also the niece of the current Daimyō of the Land of Fire. Her standing in both Konoha and the Land of Fire earned her the title “Princess of the Land of Fire.” 2 30

Following the deaths of Nawaki and Dan, Tsunade developed severe hemophobia and abandoned Konoha, associating the village with grief. She traveled with Shizune and Tonton, spending much of her time gambling, drinking, accumulating debt, and fleeing loan sharks. 2 4 46

When Senju Qianye sought her out at Tanzaku Street, Tsunade initially suspected him of being a debt collector, assassin, or agent sent by Hiruzen to bring her back. His hand-seal-free Wood Release and declaration of Senju lineage shocked her, convincing her that he was a genuine surviving Senju bloodline rather than an experimental subject. 5

Tsunade accepted Qianye's ten million ryo as a “protection fee,” then resolved to keep the emerging Senju heir from Konoha's leadership. She concealed his potential through a month-long performance of gambling, evasion, and deliberately poor medical training before Root observers, then drove the spies away and began his serious training. 6 8 9

After initially refusing to return for Qianye's Hokage succession, Tsunade was persuaded by Jiraiya to return when she learned that Qianye intended to wage war to unify the Ninja World.
