Background

Kakashi grew up believing Konoha's official account of his father Hatake Sakumo's death: Sakumo had abandoned a mission objective to save comrades, was condemned by the village, and took his own life under the resulting pressure. Kakashi doubted that a man as resolute as his father could have been broken so easily. 50

He approached Uchiha Ao seeking the truth. Ao produced Root records showing that Danzo and Konoha's higher-ups had Sakumo removed because his reputation threatened their ambitions for the Hokage position; the records also detailed the fabrication of rumors and the tampering with the scene. 50 51
