Background / History

After Nazarick is transported from YGGDRASIL into an unknown reality, Momonga confirms that the surrounding world is neither YGGDRASIL nor Helheim. Nazarick’s NPCs have become living, thinking beings and regard him with absolute reverence as their supreme ruler. Their near-equal strength frightens him: he fears they may betray him if they discover his insecurity and lack of confidence. He therefore begins memorizing Nazarick’s personnel and testing its resources while carefully maintaining the image of an infallible ruler. 10

Before becoming Momonga, he was a low-ranking worker in a society dominated by conglomerates. His parents died from overwork, and he became accustomed to emotional detachment, mechanical labor, and inexpensive liquid food. Even before his transformation into an undead, he felt little response to the suffering of strangers. 10 48

His undead body neither requires food nor rest and suppresses intense emotions. Momonga appreciates these practical advantages, although emotional suppression cannot fully contain his rage and fear after his later defeat. 10 27

Appearance

Momonga is a skeletal undead Magic Caster, typically recognized by his luxurious, gold-trimmed mage robe and the Mask of Envy. 13 23

  • Fleshless skeletal hands and jaw. 10 12
  • Wears a metal gauntlet on his left hand. 20
  • Uses the Mask of Envy, which remains after his death and resurrection. 23

Personality

Momonga is deeply insecure beneath his ruler’s façade. Having once been socially insignificant, he is uncomfortable with Nazarick’s worship and continually worries that a wrong word, a loss of authority, or an admission of weakness will cause the NPCs to abandon him. 10 11 28 46

He is cautious, analytical, and resource-conscious. He prioritizes Nazarick’s safety over sympathy, studies unknown threats before committing forces, and delegates to capable subordinates such as Demiurge rather than risking valuable Guardians. 12 32 46 48 49

His treatment of outsiders is pragmatic and often detached. He initially refuses to save villagers because doing so offers no benefit to Nazarick, though Gazef Stronoff’s character moves him to honor an oath to protect Carne Village. Later, he uses Enri’s memories for intelligence despite her suffering, then orders a painless death rather than further torture. 12 16 48 49

Abilities & Skills

Undead Physiology

Momonga’s undead body does not experience hunger, fatigue, or the need for sleep.

  • Possesses Forced Emotional Suppression, which forcibly calms extreme emotions. 27
  • Retains enough emotion to experience fear, fury, guilt, and anxiety under exceptional circumstances. 27
  • Has a physically durable skeletal body; Hades’s initial attack drives him into the ground rather than immediately shattering his bones. 23

Necromantic Magic and Eclipse Class

Momonga is a pure Magic Caster specializing in necromantic magic classes.

  • His Eclipse class grants the special skill The Goal of All Life is Death. 20
  • Can cast Control Amnesia to access and manipulate memories; he uses it on Enri to seek information about his assassin. 48
  • Attempts to cast Hell Flame during the confrontation with Nigun, but the spell fails to activate amid Hades’s ambush. 20
  • His pure caster build leaves him highly vulnerable to a prepared melee attacker. 20 23

Strategic Assessment

Momonga relies heavily on observation, threat analysis, and contingency planning.

  • Operates the Mirror of Remote Viewing to survey the world beyond Nazarick. 10 11
  • Uses the village massacre at Carne as an opportunity to estimate the local soldiers’ strength and magical capability. 12
  • Deduces that his attackers likely included a high-level caster capable of Time Stop and a Monk using Stunning Blow. 31
  • Avoids sending Guardians against an unconfirmed enemy due to the cost of resurrection and the danger of losing irreplaceable resources. 48 49

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Mirror of Remote Viewing — Displays a designated location; can be blocked by low-level anti-intelligence magic and may be counterattacked through offensive barriers. 10
  • Swap Doll — Given to Gazef as a contingency; allows Momonga and Albedo to replace him during the confrontation with the Sunlight Scripture. 16 19
  • Resurrection Ring — Activates upon his death, returning him to Nazarick while causing only low-value equipment to drop. 23 26
  • Mask of Envy — Left behind after his resurrection and collected by Hades. 23

Relationships

  • SebasNazarick’s butler and the leader of the Pleiades. Sebas serves Momonga with absolute loyalty; Momonga associates him with Sebas’s creator, Touch Me. 10 12
  • Albedo — Guardian Overseer and fiercely loyal subordinate. Momonga is reluctant to punish her after she is exiled during his assassination, but must consider the Guardians’ demands for accountability. 19 27 30
  • Demiurge — Highly capable subordinate and strategist. Momonga relies on his management and intelligence work, though Demiurge challenges Albedo’s position after the assassination. 28 32 46 48 49
  • Aura and Mare — The Dark Elf Twins. Momonga worries about their safety after his defeat and later protects them from further punishment. 27 46
  • Gazef Stronoff — A warrior Momonga admires for his willingness to protect villagers. Momonga swears to defend Carne Village and gives Gazef a Swap Doll. 16
  • Enri — Carne Village survivor used by Momonga and Demiurge as a source of intelligence. Enri ultimately hates Momonga after recalling Nazarick’s actions against her village. 47 48 49
  • Pandora — A Guardian created by Momonga. Momonga is embarrassed by Pandora’s exaggerated behavior but feels comparatively less suspicious of him. 32 49
  • Hahaha Hades — Unknown enemy who ambushes, defeats, and indirectly forces Momonga to reassess Nazarick’s defenses and the threat posed by other players. 23 27 31

Trivia

  • Momonga regards the practical lack of hunger and fatigue as one advantage of his undead body. 10
  • He considers himself poorly educated and credits Demiurge’s competence with helping him learn “the way of kings.” 49
  • His embarrassment over Pandora’s behavior stems from having personally programmed those theatrical traits during his middle-school “chuunibyou” phase. 49
