History

Following the death of the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato, Hiruzen resumed the burden of leading Konoha. He later reflects that Konoha’s political situation deteriorated while he was occupied with compromise, calculation, and preserving the larger picture. 14

When Fugaku presents a forged mission order that led Uchiha Police Force members into an ambush, Hiruzen immediately recognizes that the order is fraudulent and suspects Danzo’s involvement. He promises Fugaku an investigation, but realizes that his failure to restrain Danzo has already damaged the Uchiha clan’s trust in him. 14

Danzo subsequently admits to engineering the operation. Hiruzen condemns the deaths of Konoha shinobi and denounces Danzo for using the Hokage’s authority without permission, but cannot fully refute Danzo’s arguments about the Nine-Tails incident and the perceived Uchiha threat.
