History
Sarutobi Hiruzen's removal
Sarutobi Hiruzen's authority eroded as Hyuga Kagami's public standing grew. After Kagami handed the captured Tailed Beasts to Hiruzen, the Daimyo's representatives held Hiruzen responsible and stripped him of the Hokage position 106.
Although removed from office, Hiruzen attempted to preserve his influence through the Council of Elders and plotted to prevent Kagami from taking the position 107. He later relied on Sarutobi Sho's Dead Demon Consuming Seal in an attempt to kill Kagami, but was defeated and killed by Kagami 115 118.
Hyuga Kagami's tenure
Kagami's support surged after he defended Konoha against three major shinobi villages; Konoha's guards described him as a guardian deity and credited him with defeating Ōnoki and repelling the Fourth Raikage and Fourth Kazekage 113. Following the Hokage election, he was recognized as the Fifth Hokage 120 126.
As Hokage, Kagami rejected the Daimyo of the Land of Fire's demand to surrender the Tailed Beasts and instead ordered Konoha to strike first against the Daimyo's Palaces 125. He used the Ten-Tails during the ensuing conflict, routing the samurai army opposing Konoha 126.
Kagami later convened a Konoha Assembly, presenting a plan to restore peace to the Shinobi World through the collective efforts of its shinobi 143. Even after leaving office, he continued to protect the world from a divine palace outside Konoha 201.
Uchiha Shisui's succession
Kagami voluntarily abdicated as Hokage despite public attempts to dissuade him 201. Uchiha Shisui was subsequently elected to succeed him, becoming the first Uchiha Hokage. Kagami supported the transition, while Shisui pledged to fulfill the office's duty of protecting Konoha 201.
