Background

Tōyama comes from a family that sells lamps and electrical appliances. His ancestors adopted the surname Tō (“Lamp”) after entering the lamp trade so customers would associate the family name with their products. His uncle, Uncle Tō, leads the family's research department. 35 68

He graduated from the Academy and was assigned to Team 11 alongside Hyuga Dongyi/Gen and Uchiha Izumi. Intimidated by teammates from two major clans, he nevertheless regarded the assignment as fortunate because it increased his safety. 35

Before leaving shinobi service, Tōyama learned that his older brother had been crippled after being framed by a business rival. With his family needing help managing its industries, Tōyama chose to return to the family business. 174

Team 11 Formation

Tōyama joined Gen and Izumi in Team 11. As the team's least physically capable member, he relied on their support during Might Guy's two-hundred-lap assessment; Gen and Izumi shared their lunches with him, and Gen ultimately carried him through the final stretch. 35 36 37

During the team's cat-catching mission, Tōyama repeatedly attempted to catch the cat while Gen and Izumi watched. The cat's evasive antics left him frustrated and exhausted. 38

Chunin Exams

Under Gen's instruction, Tōyama quickly learned Earth Wall and entered the exams with improved confidence. 58

Matched against Gen in the final round, Tōyama initially despaired but chose to fight. Using Izumi's plan, he trapped himself in an Earth Release dome, briefly leaving Gen without an easy way to attack him. 61

Land of Rivers Mission

As the only genin on the A-rank mission to protect the Third Prince of the Land of Rivers, Tōyama was overwhelmed by the assignment's difficulty but treated it as a chance to grow. 70

After falling ill from an expired Military Ration Pill Gen gave him, he recovered and helped maintain the team's cover. He and Gen posed as cousins while Izumi infiltrated the palace, and later used the aliases Mu Deng and Mu Quan when introduced to Kawaki Jin. 73 77 78 80

Following Hozuki Mangetsu's attack, Tōyama visited the hospitalized Gen and praised his foresight in arranging for Konoha reinforcements beforehand. 98

Land of Water and Desert Missions

Tōyama accompanied Team 11 on the B-rank escort mission to the Land of Water. When a storm destroyed their boat, he, Gen, and Xiaojin survived on a floating plank before boarding an abandoned ghost ship for shelter. 109 120

During later desert travel, he used Earth Release to construct an earthen shelter. He also became fascinated with Gen's Kusanagi Sword: Wind's Edge, repeatedly paying—or attempting to avoid paying—for the chance to inspect it. 132 134

Uchiha Massacre and Resignation

Believing Izumi had died in the Uchiha clan massacre, Tōyama was devastated by Gen's apparent calmness and angrily accused him of not caring. He later apologized after deciding that Gen was simply concealing his grief. 159 174

Tōyama arrived during Root's attempt to take Karin and stood with Gen despite the danger. Soon afterward, he formally moved to resign from shinobi service so he could support his injured brother and help run the family business. 174
