Background / History
Creation of the Primordial World
In primordial Chaos, Pangu led the three thousand Chaos Gods and Devils. Seeking to attain the status of a Great Dao Saint, he intended to open the Primordial World, a task requiring the combined origins of the other gods and devils. When they united against him, Pangu fought them for countless yuanhui without a decisive result. 21
Pangu eventually obtained the Pangu Axe and the Jade of Creation, two Heavenly Dao artifacts. With their power, he slew the Chaos Gods and Devils, devoured their origins, and opened the Primordial World. The act exhausted him, while the Pangu Axe split into the Taiji Diagram, Pangu Banner, and Chaos Bell. 21
Several surviving Chaos God-Devil souls manipulated chaotic energy to suppress the newly formed world. Unable to withstand the resulting pressure, Pangu died and transformed into all things. His Primordial Spirit and clear qi became the Three Pure Ones, while his heart blood and turbid qi formed the Twelve Ancestral Witches. 21
Legacy in the Primordial World
Mount Buzhou, the first mountain created when Pangu split Heaven and Earth, bears Pangu’s Pressure. Its outer range is inaccessible to beings of shallow cultivation, who would be annihilated upon entering. 9
A later fluctuation of this pressure leaves behind Pangu’s Information: knowledge spanning from the beginning of Chaos to the present and potentially future events. The information manifests as a nine-colored Crystal of Information within Pangu’s consciousness remnant. 9 17
The descendants and innate beings born within Mount Buzhou benefit from living under Pangu’s Pressure. Some gain traces of Pangu’s Great Dao divine abilities through it. 87
Pangu True King
Later revelations distinguish the creator of the Primordial World from Pangu True King of Chaos. The world-creating Pangu was only one cell of this greater being, one among millions of similar incarnations. Pangu True King is said to have opened the myriad heavens and worlds and to stand at the peak of the three-thousandth Sage level. 175
Pangu True King secretly manipulates the River of Fate, the Return to Ruin, the True Kings, and Xuanji’s path to awaken and attain the Dao. After absorbing the River of Fate and Return to Ruin, he is struck by the backlash of creation; his consciousness is annihilated and merged into the Source of Beginning. The source later gives birth to Xuanji and Pangu as innate deities locked in an eternal struggle that produces countless worlds and stars. 177 178
Appearance
Pangu appears in several forms, ranging from a spiritual remnant to an imposing humanoid deity.
- Consciousness remnant — a ten-zhang cyan giant formed from spiritual energy, carrying a great axe and possessing blood-red eyes filled with murderous intent 17.
- Tyrannical spirit body — emerges from a five-colored egg-like defensive barrier after being besieged by Demon Kings 19.
- Humanoid manifestation — a muscular man appearing around his thirties, with a stern face, disheveled hair, and a giant axe as large as his body 108.
- Pangu phantom — manifests through the Three Pure Ones Pangu Wheel as an ancient, rugged deity wielding a ten-thousand-zhang axe 144.
Personality
The original Pangu is defined by relentless ambition and overwhelming resolve. To open the Primordial World and seek the Great Dao, he chose to kill the other Chaos Gods and Devils and absorb their origins. 21
His Mount Buzhou consciousness remnant lacks reason. Corrupted by subterranean Killing Intent, it acts on violent bloodlust rather than the wisdom or rationality expected of the world’s creator. 17
Pangu True King is calculating and manipulative, having arranged events across the River of Fate, Return to Ruin, and multiple lineages to facilitate his own awakening. 177 178
Abilities & Skills
Opening Heaven and Earth
Pangu opened the Primordial World through the power gained from the three thousand Chaos Gods and Devils and the Heavenly Dao artifacts. 21
- Slaughtered the Chaos Gods and Devils after acquiring the Pangu Axe and Jade of Creation. 21
- Used their origins to obtain the power necessary for creation. 21
- The immense cost of creation left him exhausted and vulnerable to the surviving gods and devils’ suppression. 21
Pangu’s Pressure
Pangu’s residual pressure permeates Mount Buzhou and functions as both a barrier and a source of inheritance. 9 87
- Prevents weak cultivators from entering Mount Buzhou; shallow cultivation results in annihilation. 9
- Can retract toward Mount Buzhou, opening portions of the range to outside beings. 9 10
- Allows gifted descendants and innate beings to glimpse traces of Pangu’s Dao. 87
Spiritual-Energy Manifestation
Pangu’s consciousness can gather spiritual energy and create a powerful physical body despite being only a fragment. 17
- Drained an entire spiritual vein, including its fundamental origin, to form a physical spirit body. 17
- Possessed exceptional affinity with the Primordial World, enabling rapid recovery when surrounded by spiritual energy. 18
- Its recovery weakened when Demon Kings blocked its access to ambient spiritual energy. 18
Axe Arts
Even the remnant’s crude axe attacks carry a portion of Pangu’s heaven-splitting methods. 18
- Its axe pressure suppresses weaker opponents and prevents them from using their full strength. 18
- A seemingly simple cleaving strike possesses power beyond an ordinary attack. 18
- In its tyrannical state, one axe swing kills nearly twenty Demon Kings. 19
- The remnant’s techniques are limited compared with the original Pangu’s true heaven-splitting arts. 18
Pangu Nine Forms
The Pangu Nine Forms are the distilled essence of Pangu’s Great Dao of splitting Heaven and Earth. They are preserved within the Three Pure Ones Pangu Wheel. 144
- Evolved from eighty-one axe strikes into nine forms. 144
- The first form allows Xuanji to contend with a First-Realm Sage despite possessing inferior Sage cultivation. 144
- Using the first form requires tremendous power and severely damages both the user and the treasures forming the Pangu Axe. 144
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Pangu Axe — a Heavenly Dao artifact used in the creation of the Primordial World; it later split into the Taiji Diagram, Pangu Banner, and Chaos Bell. 21
- Jade of Creation — a Heavenly Dao artifact associated with Pangu’s victory over the Chaos Gods and Devils; it contains the three thousand Great Daos. 21 144
- Crystal of Information — a nine-colored crystal embedded in the consciousness remnant’s heart, containing major knowledge of Chaos and the Primordial World. He Yu seizes it before destroying the remnant. 17 20 21
Relationships
- He Yu / Xuanji — He Yu destroys Pangu’s Mount Buzhou consciousness remnant and takes the Crystal of Information. Pangu True King later reveals that Xuanji/He Yu had been a chess piece in his larger scheme. 20 21 177
- Three Thousand Chaos Gods and Devils — Pangu was their leader before killing them to absorb their origins for the creation of the Primordial World. 21
- Hongjun, Luo Hou, Yang Mei, Yin Yang, Qiankun, and Cangqiong — surviving remnants of Chaos God-Devils who retained resentment toward Pangu after the ancient slaughter. 21
- Three Pure Ones — formed from Pangu’s Primordial Spirit and clear qi; they can merge into a manifestation of Pangu’s Primordial Spirit. 21 125
- Twelve Ancestral Witches — formed from Pangu’s heart blood and turbid qi; their combined power can evolve Pangu divine power and the Pangu True Body. 21 172
- Houtu — uses the power derived from the Twelve Ancestral Witches to attain the Dao through Pangu divine power without sacrificing her kin. 172
- Evil Dragon Demon King — leads the initial resistance against Pangu’s consciousness remnant and rallies the Demon Kings into a joint attack. 18
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Mount Buzhou’s opening — Pangu’s Pressure recedes, enabling demons to enter the outer range and compete for Pangu’s Information. 9 10
- Conscious Spirit Body — Pangu’s remnant consciousness absorbs a spiritual vein and manifests to guard the Crystal of Information. 17
- Battle for the Crystal — the remnant battles more than one hundred Demon Kings, transforms into a tyrannical form, devours Demon Cores, and is ultimately defeated by He Yu. 18 19 20 21
- Four Symbols Seal — a humanoid Pangu appears from Chaos and acknowledges Xuanji’s strengthening of the seal. 108
- Pangu’s inherited Dao — the Three Pure Ones’ Pangu secret art, the reconstructed Pangu Axe, and the Pangu Nine Forms become crucial sources of power for Xuanji. 125 131 144
- Final revelation — Pangu True King is exposed as the architect behind Xuanji’s fate and the greater scheme surrounding Return to Ruin and the River of Fate. 177 178
