The Englishmen were instantly startled. They had never expected these Negroes to have cannons.

The next moment, a neat Infantry Line appeared on the north side of the cotton fields—more than seven hundred soldiers in all. Aside from some Mixed-Blood officers, the overwhelming majority were Blacks.

Though these Black soldiers wore all manner of clothing, every one of them held a Charleville 1763 flintlock gun.

The English Army had been too focused on pursuing the routed enemy, and now had no formation to speak of. Under the desperate bellowing and curses of their officers, they could only barely halt and turn toward the incoming enemy.

Yet Louverture gave them no chance to organize themselves. He raised his saber high and charged at the very front. Only when he could clearly make out the faces of the English soldiers did he shout his command:

"Halt! Prepare to fire!"

The officers swiftly passed down the order. In less than a minute, seven hundred Black soldiers raised their flintlock guns in unison.

"Aim!"

"Fire!"

A cloud of gun smoke rolled into the sky as a dense volley flew toward the English soldiers, who had yet to recover their wits. More than a dozen men screamed and fell at once.

Louverture's troops then reloaded swiftly, advanced twenty paces, and fired another volley before continuing to reload and advance...

By the time Lieutenant Colonel Strauss realized something was wrong and sent in the reserves, the nine English Army columns before the cotton fields had already scattered in every direction, leaving more than two hundred corpses behind.
