Seeing Taine under control, Sean Hayes finally climbed up from the ground. He skirted around him warily, then put on a fawning smile and said to Joseph:
"Your Highness the Crown Prince, give me two days, and your Flemish Legion will be fighting for you on the battlefield."
Taine snorted from the side. "Hmph! As long as I am here, not a single Fleming will serve the French!"
Joseph glanced at him, then asked Sean Hayes, "Does this Mr. Taine have considerable influence in your army?"
"Yes..." The latter nodded instinctively, then immediately shook his head. "Ah, no, Your Highness. You know, General Taine's family will pay his ransom, which is why he is displaying this so-called loyalty and courage here.
"But most soldiers do not want to remain prisoners here. That means no pay, and a long time doing hard labor. I will definitely be able to persuade them."
Joseph looked at him with interest. "And you? Why have you not had someone ransom you?"
"Er, well... my family is rather poor, and besides, I greatly admire you..."
Taine said disdainfully, "Because this fellow abandoned his own position and fled yesterday. After returning to Brussels, the only thing awaiting him is trial by Military Tribunal."
A French Army soldier raised his gun and made a threatening gesture at him, barking:
"Shut up!"
Joseph narrowed his eyes slightly and raised a hand to signal the soldier. "Oh, please afford this general the bare minimum of dignity. Release him."
"Yes, Your Highness!"
The soldiers released the hands pinning Taine down, though they continued to watch him with great vigilance.
Joseph first had Sean Hayes taken to the prisoner camp, then turned his gaze to Taine.
"General Taine, perhaps we can cooperate. Oh, how about a cup of tea in my tent?"
