Background / History
Meng Yue entered the Yang Family Martial Arts Hall more than two years before Hong Yuan's arrival. He was diligent, talented, highly respectful toward Yang Erhu, and repeatedly sought acceptance as Yang Erhu's personal disciple. Yang Erhu, however, sensed something off about him and never committed to taking him in. 17 28
His true allegiance was to the Dragon-Subduing Sect, the lineage founded by Grandmaster Dragon-Tiger's disciple Zhang. Acting under orders from the sect's Divine Firmament Young Master, Meng Yue infiltrated the martial hall to obtain the Tiger-Subduing Sect's secret transmission and pursue the Momentum of Dragon and Tiger. 23
Hong Yuan's immediate acceptance as Yang Erhu's personal disciple destroyed Meng Yue's expectations of gaining the same position. After Hong Yuan defeated him during a martial-hall challenge, Meng Yue sought instructions from his handler, Mr. Cui, who ordered Hong Yuan's death. 15 17
Appearance
Meng Yue was a tall, sturdy young martial artist. Following his defeats by Hong Yuan, he was left with a bruised, swollen face before later sustaining severe injuries in their final confrontation. 15 23
- Usually maintained a cold, stern expression. 20
- Disguised himself in inconspicuous black-gray clothing and a low-brimmed bamboo hat when meeting Yan Tieshan. 17
- Carried and fought with a steel saber. 22
Personality
Meng Yue was ambitious, resentful, and patient enough to spend two years cultivating Yang Erhu's favor under a false identity. He viewed martial arts inheritance as a prize to be acquired, and Hong Yuan's succession as a personal theft of the position he believed he had earned. 17 23
He could remain composed in dangerous negotiations, such as when dealing with Yan Tieshan's armed guards, and he endured Mr. Cui's abuse without resistance due to fear and loyalty to his superiors. 17 18 As his plans repeatedly failed, however, his caution gave way to desperation; he relied on hired ruffians and attempted murder rather than accepting defeat. 19 21
