Background / History
Lola entered Mensis Wizard Academy with ambitions of becoming a powerful wizard, but her poor aptitude left her repeatedly frustrated. After falling deeply into debt, she was noticed by a powerful figure and subjected to treatment she regarded as worse than death. Using that figure's influence and resources, she rose to Second-Rank Apprentice and founded the Newcomer Mutual Aid Society. 39
Her organization targeted new apprentices with predatory loans. Lola used deliberately misleading terms—such as “nine in, thirteen out” with compounded interest—to make repayment nearly impossible, then pressured debtors into joining the Society or facing punishment. 21 37
Before entering the Academy, Lola lived in Boer Village of the Faston Kingdom with her parents and younger sister. She had promised herself that, once she became powerful, she would return and provide her family with a better life. 40
Appearance
Lola is a female apprentice whose appearance bears visible marks of her past treatment and medical dependence. She commonly goes barefoot beneath her black wizard robe. 21 36
- An external feeding tube is connected around her stomach due to a damaged esophagus. 21
- Carries a urine bag attached to her thigh. 21
- Her robe is tight-fitting around the tube and bag. 36
- Her enchanted anklets keep her bare feet clean, protected, and free from pain or calluses. 40
- Her movements and mannerisms are described as frivolous and invasive. 21
Personality
Lola is calculating, cruel, and vindictive toward apprentices in circumstances resembling her own. Having suffered through debt and exploitation, she chose to recreate that suffering through the Newcomer Mutual Aid Society rather than prevent it. She takes satisfaction in breaking the pride of indebted freshmen and forcing them into submission. 39
She is also bold in relying on her backing: she openly appears near the corpse of a debtor allegedly killed by her Society, even while the Enforcement Squad is nearby. 36 However, when faced with death herself, Lola abandons the ruthless standard she imposed on others and repeatedly begs Ahab for mercy. 39 40
Abilities & Skills
Second-Rank Witchcraft
Lola can use Second-Rank Apprentice-level witchcraft and had access to spells enhanced by her benefactor. 39
- Pneumatic Art — Creates powerful cyclones capable of launching a Third-Rank Apprentice and inflicting fatal internal injuries. 39
- Her witchcraft was repeatedly nullified by Ahab's See Through Authority during their final confrontation. 39
Refined Physique
Lola possesses a physically refined body, allowing her to endure blows that would be more debilitating to an ordinary apprentice. 39
- She continued resisting after suffering repeated strikes to the head with a Blue Steel Brick. 39
- Her physical resilience was ultimately overcome by concussion, repeated blunt-force trauma, and Corpse Dissolving Powder. 39 40
Predatory Lending and Coercion
As president of the Newcomer Mutual Aid Society, Lola is skilled at exploiting Academy lending rules and vulnerable apprentices.
- Personally handles loans she considers promising or profitable. 21
- Uses deceptive IOU wording and compounded interest to trap borrowers. 21 37
- Pressures debtors to join the Society as an alternative to repayment. 37
- Uses fear, humiliation, and violence to enforce debts. 36 39
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Enchanted anklets — Wizard tools given to Lola by Wizard Tupa. They clean and protect the wearer’s bare feet, preventing dirt, pain, and calluses. Ahab took them after killing Lola and discarded one into a wishing pool, where Tolia later found it. 40 41 50
- Decorative nail — A wizard tool that confronts both user and target with painful memories and hallucinations. Lola’s use of it backfired, leaving her convulsing and foaming at the mouth. 39 40
- External feeding tube and urine bag — Medical apparatuses Lola relies on due to her damaged esophagus and physical condition. 21
Relationships
- Ahab Gul — Debtor, target for recruitment, and eventual killer. Lola loaned him Magic Stones for his bloodline transplant, then attempted to coerce him into the Mutual Aid Society; Ahab ambushed and killed her. 21 37 39 40
- Wizard Tupa — Powerful benefactor connected to Lola’s rise and possessions. Tupa gave her the enchanted anklets and is identified as the official wizard behind her. 47 50
- Newcomer Mutual Aid Society debtors — Lola exploits indebted freshmen through excessive interest, coercion, and punishment. One debtor was publicly hanged near the General Affairs Hall. 36
- Andre — Tupa’s apprentice. Andre recognizes Lola’s anklets as tools his teacher had given to one of his “toys,” leading him to suspect Lola’s death. 46 47
Story Role / Major Arcs
Loan to Ahab
Lola personally issues Ahab a loan of 50 Magic Stones for his Withered Wood Guardian bloodline transplant. He receives only 45 Magic Stones, while the Society’s terms leave him with an escalating debt. Lola intends to make him unable to repay and recruit him into her organization. 21
Debt Collection
After Ahab returns from his mission, Lola demands monthly interest payments of 15 Magic Stones and offers him Society membership as an alternative. She arranges an “initiation test” in a secluded West District grove, expecting to dominate him as she has other debtors. 36 37
Death
Ahab prepares Corpse Dissolving Powder, a Blue Steel Brick, and enough faith power to use See Through against Lola’s spells. He scratches her neck with poison concealed beneath his fingernail, nullifies her witchcraft, and repeatedly strikes her head with the brick. The dissolving powder destroys her body from within, leaving her unable to resist. 38 39 40
After Lola dies, Ahab absorbs 120 points of faith power, reflecting the deaths she had directly or indirectly caused. He recovers her wizard tools and disposes of evidence at the scene. 40
