Background / History

Piccolo fought alongside Son Goku against Raditz despite their rivalry. Raditz severely injured him and tore off his left arm, but Piccolo used the battle to prepare the Special Beam Cannon. The attack grazed Raditz, cutting through his shoulder armor and flattening a mountain range, but Piccolo was left exhausted and unable to continue fighting 2 3.

After Wu Fei defeated Raditz, Piccolo recovered with a Senzu Bean and regenerated his missing arm. Wu Fei proposed that Piccolo train Gohan, recognizing the child's potential. Piccolo initially objected because of his enmity with Goku, but accepted the role after seeing Gohan's latent strength 6 7.

He trained Gohan in the wilderness for the coming Saiyan threat, forcing him to develop independence while secretly watching over him to ensure his safety. During the battle against the Vegetable Men, Piccolo continued instructing Gohan in live combat and helped him draw out his actual strength 8 9 11.

On Namek, Piccolo felt an immediate sense of familiarity and belonging. The Grand Elder identified him as Katatz's grandson and explained that Kami had been sent away from Namek as a child during a catastrophic environmental collapse. The revelation gave Piccolo a connection to his Namekian heritage and to the Grand Elder himself 24 26.

The Grand Elder later awakened Piccolo's potential, granting him enough power to surpass Nail. After Piccolo and Gohan used Earth's Dragon Balls to revive the Namekians killed by Frieza's forces, Nail willingly assimilated with Piccolo in gratitude; Piccolo accepted on the condition that he would protect Namek in future crises 27 61.

Appearance

Piccolo is a tall, green-skinned Namekian. During his first appearance, he is visibly battle-worn, with his clothing reduced to tatters and his left arm severed at the shoulder 2.

Personality

Despite his reputation as a Demon King and his hostile history with Goku, Piccolo follows personal principles and refuses to involve innocents in his grudges. His mentorship of Gohan gradually reveals his protective side; he watches over the boy during harsh training, rescues him from Salza, and later shows continued concern for Gohan in battle 7 9 60 182.

He is also tactical under pressure. Rather than relying only on force, he uses misdirection, afterimages, limb extension, and carefully timed energy attacks to create openings against stronger opponents 200.

Raditz Conflict

Piccolo joins Goku against Raditz, charges his Special Beam Cannon, and narrowly misses the Saiyan. He is healed after Wu Fei ends the battle and regrows his severed arm 2 3 6.

Gohan's Training

At Wu Fei's urging, Piccolo becomes Gohan's trainer. He takes the reluctant child into the wilderness, monitors his survival from the shadows, and teaches him practical combat during the Vegetable Men battle 7 9 11.

Namek Arc

Piccolo returns to Namek, learns he is Katatz's grandson, and has his potential awakened by the Grand Elder. His battle power rises to 50,000, surpassing Nail and Goku at that point 24 26 27.

Piccolo later avenges slain Namekians by defeating Zarbon with Demon Flash 30. After Nail assimilates with him, Piccolo gains million-range power and annihilates Salza, Dore, and Neiz of Cooler's Armored Squadron 60 61.

World Martial Arts Tournament

Piccolo recognizes Shin as the East Supreme Kai and displays unusual fear and reverence due to the hierarchy of the Kaioshin 113.

Universe 6 Tournament

Piccolo faces Frost after Krillin's defeat. He overwhelms Frost's initial form, but Frost's transformation puts Piccolo at a disadvantage. Piccolo attempts to win through the Special Beam Cannon, Afterimage Technique, and his extendable arm, but Frost disrupts him with a hidden move and causes him to fall from the ring 199 200 201.

Tournament of Power

Piccolo joins Universe 7's Tournament of Power roster. He is eventually eliminated after an unseen, tiny opponent repeatedly attacks him and kicks him out of the arena 229 236.
