Background / History

Early prominence

The Interception Sect was regarded as the foremost sect in the Primordial World, with vast membership and Lord Tongtian as its Saint master. Its disciples included Daoist Duobao, Zhao Gongming, the Three Xiao Sisters, the Holy Mothers, Kong Xuan, Lu Ya, and numerous demon cultivators. 1 179

Lingxiao was once Lord Tongtian's direct disciple and a central organizer of the sect. He established the Interception Sect Heavenly Rules, mediated disputes with the Human Sect and Clarifying Sect, recruited Lu Ya, Kong Xuan, and the Golden-Winged Great Roc, and assisted the sect in securing human-race influence. 1

He also repeatedly entered the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation to purge karmic sins of slaughter from the sect's fortune. His final seclusion inside the formation lasted one hundred thousand years and cost him his Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal cultivation. 1 4

Lingxiao's expulsion

As the Investiture of the Gods Calamity approached, Lingxiao argued that fellow disciples should willingly enter the Investiture of the Gods. The sect treated this as betrayal; Lord Tongtian and the disciples condemned him, and Lingxiao severed his ties with the Interception Sect. 1

After his departure, Immortal Dingguang led disciples in destroying Lingxiao's cave abode and traces of his presence. The Interception Sect Heavenly Rules were later abolished, removing restraints that had kept many demon and outer disciples in check. 9 481

The consequences were immediate: the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation became restless, karmic sins returned, and the sect's providence began to destabilize. Several disciples privately recognized that Lingxiao's absence had accelerated the sect's decline, though Daoist Duobao forbade such admissions. 4 102

Demon Court alliance and internal restructuring

To divert the sect's accumulating slaughter karma, Lord Tongtian supported the reestablishment of the Demon Court under Lu Ya. Nuwa became a crucial ally, but the Demon Court's eventual destruction caused the suppressed karmic backlash to fall upon the Interception Sect. 27 122 172

Lord Tongtian and Nuwa temporarily stabilized the sect's fortune through the Cosmos Cauldron and the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation. Nuwa then reshaped the sect's leadership: Bai Ze became vice sect leader, Lu Ya shared inner-sect authority with Daoist Duobao, and demon-race experts were recruited into the sect. 176

Nuwa later withdrew to care for Fuxi, leaving the Landscape and Kingdom Diagram and Cosmos Cauldron behind. Bai Ze subsequently led demon-race experts away from Golden Turtle Island and severed their karma with the sect through a Heavenly Dao oath. 308 309

Northern Abyss scheme

The Interception Sect attempted to use the banner of purging those who defied the Heavenly Dao to drive the Witch Race from the Northern Sea. Lord Tongtian approved the operation while requiring the Demon Court to bear any resulting karma. 130 131

Later, Ghost Chariot and other disciples sought to break the restriction formation in Northern Abyss Burial Chasm and release the sealed Fierce Beast Race. The Human Sect, Clarifying Sect, Western Sect, Heavenly Court, and Witch Race converged on the incident, leaving the Interception Sect exposed and politically isolated. 271 275 279

Bai Ze became disillusioned after the sect's leadership did not act decisively to protect Ghost Chariot and the implicated disciples. 279

Investiture of the Gods conflict

During the Investiture of the Gods War, the Interception Sect relied on Great Shang, its human disciples, and a series of large formations to confront Western Qi and the other Sage sects. Holy Mother Golden Spirit accepted Wen Zhong and Yu Yuan as disciples, giving the sect influence within Great Shang. 126

The Ten Heavenly Lords established the Ten Absolute Formation outside Western Qi. Jiang Ziya manipulated their fear of becoming stepping stones for enemy disciples, making it difficult for them either to fight or withdraw without losing face. 420

After losses among the formations, the sect escalated its campaign. Daoist Duobao, Kong Xuan, and Yunxiao formed the Myriad Immortals Sword Formation, but the Western Sect answered with Western Paradise, shaking the formation and nearly converting disciples whose Dao hearts were unstable. 552

The sect eventually fell apart and was described as nearly destroyed. Holy Mother Golden Spirit was annihilated, with her soul scattered and reincarnation considered unlikely. 562 613

Reconstruction

A century later, the Interception Sect again had tens of thousands of disciples moving through Cangwu Mountain, and cultivators of many races continued to seek entry. Its new chief disciple, Xuandaozi, screened applicants according to sect rules, though the sect's overall cultivation standards remained far below their former level. 686

Assets & Formations

Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation

The sect's primary supreme formation, housed within Azure Roaming Palace. It contains the true essence of the Sword Dao, serves as a whetstone for disciples, and was used to suppress the sect's restless fortune and slaughter karma. 4 176

  • Lingxiao's long-term purification work kept the formation stable before his expulsion. 4
  • Lord Tongtian used it alongside the Cosmos Cauldron to suppress karmic backlash after the Demon Court's fall. 176
  • Yunxiao later chose to imprint the formation within herself in an attempt to reach the Quasi-Sage realm. 179

Green Duckweed Sword

Lord Tongtian's sword and a symbol of his authority. The sect considered using it as compensation to secure the return of Zhao Gongming, Immortal Dingguang, and the Golden-Winged Great Roc. 1 27

Cosmos Cauldron

A treasure provided by Nuwa to stabilize the Interception Sect's fortune after the destruction of the Demon Court. Lord Tongtian refined it and used it with the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation to erase the immediate karmic repercussions of slaughter. 176

Landscape and Kingdom Diagram

A top-grade Xiantian Spiritual Treasure left with the sect when Nuwa withdrew. Daoist Duobao later wielded it during his advancement and in battle. 308 315 430

Ten Absolute Formation

A network of peerless formations established against Western Qi by the Ten Heavenly Lords. Known components include the Heaven Absolute Formation, Golden Light Formation, Soul-Falling Formation, Red Water Formation, Wind Roar Formation, and Blood-Transforming Formation. 420 424

Myriad Immortals Sword Formation

A large-scale ultimate formation led by Daoist Duobao, Kong Xuan, and Yunxiao during the final stages of the Investiture of the Gods War. Kong Xuan's Five Elements Laws improved its operation and drew in spiritual energy to strengthen its participants. 552

  • It was considered comparable to renowned formations such as the Zhou Tian Star Dou Grand Array and Twelve Capital Gods Fiend Formation. 552
  • Its stability was compromised when the Western Sect descended Western Paradise. 552

  • Nuwa — Strategic ally during the Demon Court period; helped stabilize the sect's fortune before withdrawing to Nuwa Heaven. 176 308
  • Demon Court — Allied force used to absorb part of the sect's slaughter karma; its destruction triggered a devastating backlash against the Interception Sect. 27 172
  • Clarifying Sect — Principal rival; ideological conflict and repeated clashes between the two sects drive much of the Investiture of the Gods conflict. 22 24
  • Human Sect — Rival faction that joined efforts against the Interception Sect during the Northern Abyss affair and the final war. 275 552
  • Western Sect — Rival that accepted Immortal Dingguang after his betrayal and countered the Myriad Immortals Sword Formation with Western Paradise. 285 552
