Background / History

Cat Granny initially offered the blade to Uchiha Mo in exchange for investigating the killings of black-market merchants in the Land of Birds. Mo accepted the arrangement, though he postponed claiming the sword until after completing the mission. 11

After Team 8 returned from the Land of Birds and Mo revealed that Kakuzu had been responsible for the killings, Cat Granny honored the agreement. Tamaki delivered the black-bladed weapon to Mo, who accepted it as a replacement for the ninja blade destroyed during his battle with Kakuzu. 30

Cat Granny identified the weapon as Futsunomitama, also called the Futsuru or Futsuryu Sword, and advised Mo to test it with elemental chakra. 30 It is described as a legendary god-slaying sword formed from the true body of Takemikazuchi. 31

Futsunomitama is one of the Three Spirit Swords, alongside the Ame-no-Murakumo Sword and the Totsuka Blade. Orochimaru possesses the former and is known to have sought the latter, supporting the existence and significance of all three blades. 31

Appearance

Futsunomitama is a straight, gleaming ninja sword with a black hilt and a snow-bright blade. It is large enough that Tamaki, who is around Shisui's age, carries it with difficulty. 30

Exceptional Sharpness

Even without chakra enhancement, an ordinary strike with Futsunomitama cut nearly halfway through a centuries-old tree. 32
