Background / History
Dumbledore personally receives Canopus Black after his arrival at Lakeheart Island. He introduces himself, uses Fawkes to bring Canopus to the Leaky Cauldron, and arranges for Hogwarts to cover the boy’s accommodation until term begins. 6
Having been contacted by Merlin in a dream, Dumbledore is aware that Canopus possesses unusual knowledge and a significant destiny. He accepts Merlin’s endorsement and allows Canopus to improve Harry Potter’s living conditions, but explicitly forbids him from revealing magic to Harry before Hogwarts. 9 30
As Hogwarts headmaster, Dumbledore oversees the Sorting Ceremony, warns students away from the Forbidden Forest and the fourth-floor corridor, and is treated with immediate reverence by the student body. 14 He also develops a flexible plan intended to prepare Harry, Ron, and Hermione for distinct roles in the conflict with Voldemort. 28
Dumbledore agrees to Canopus’s proposal to assess Voldemort through Quirrell while retaining oversight of the plan. 30 After Canopus recovers Tom Riddle’s diary, Dumbledore identifies it as a heavily protected Dark object and accepts the possibility that it is a Horcrux. 52
He later investigates the Chamber of Secrets with Harry and Canopus, interpreting Slytherin’s legacy, the Basilisk’s altered condition, and the Egyptian inscriptions on Mehen’s spear. 60 64 With Canopus, he confirms Ravenclaw’s Diadem as another Horcrux, retrieves and destroys additional Horcruxes, and studies Voldemort’s use of the Pharaoh Apotheosis Spell. 104 129 131 163 196
Dumbledore previously refused the position of Minister for Magic because he feared power would make him arrogant and authoritarian. 82 As Chief Warlock, he later presides over the proceedings that end Cornelius Fudge’s administration and begin the election that elevates Rufus Scrimgeour. 157
During Voldemort’s return and the ensuing war, Dumbledore coordinates strategy with Canopus. They recognize that Voldemort’s divinity is strengthened by fear and plan to undermine his image of invincibility as well as confront him directly. 182 Dumbledore duels Voldemort repeatedly, including at Fudge Manor and during the siege of Hogwarts. 196 235 His fading life force is restored during the Trinity’s intervention, though he is later buried by the postwar period. 238 249
