Background / History
Nangong Yan was a freelance combat coach from Earth who had trained in freestyle fighting for fifteen years. During a 2018 thunderstorm, purple lightning struck him while he was watching Naruto after an episode of One Piece. He awakened in the One Piece world in the recently deceased body of Blair, whose family and ship crew had died in a storm. 1
His first days on an unnamed West Blue island were dominated by survival. While nearly killed by a python, he awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and its Kamui ability. He later awakened the Mythical Zoan Golden Crow Fruit, then spent six months training his body, Devil Fruit, and ocular powers while living off hunted beasts. 2 3
After leaving the island, Nangong Yan defeated the Locke Pirates, massacred a mafia group after discovering their captives, and briefly sought entry into the Marines to learn Haki. Instead, he exploited Marineford as a training ground, secretly copying swordsmanship and the Six Powers before leaving to pursue real combat experience. 4 5 6 10
His kidnapping and extortion of a Celestial Dragon made him internationally notorious. The World Government issued a one-billion-Beli bounty, while Nangong Yan used the resources gained from the incident to acquire weapons, Haki methods, Seastone, and other assets for his rise. 15
Appearance
Nangong Yan is initially described as a handsome youth with long black hair, sharp brows, bright eyes, a high nose, thin lips, and an angular face. Intensive training rapidly changes his physique from a pale, frail body into an imposing, muscular frame. 1 4
- His black hair was once tied with a purple vine; after six months of training, he stood 1.65 meters tall with a sturdy build. 4
- By his Divine Punishment Island training, he had grown beyond two meters tall and developed a golden flame mark between his brows. 27
- The True Yang Body Tempering Technique gives his body a bronze hue and a highly proportioned, powerful physique. 74
- In Golden Crow True Form, he becomes a three-legged divine bird with crimson-gold feathers, twelve talons, dragon-scaled neck feathers, phoenix plumes, and a Great Sun Sacred Wheel behind his back. 4
- His half-beast combat style can produce Golden Crow claws, wings, and a third clawed arm from his abdomen. 52 53
Personality
Nangong Yan is driven by combat, exploration, and continual improvement. From his arrival in the new world, he is excited by its Devil Fruits, Haki, powerful opponents, and opportunities to test himself. He repeatedly seeks dangerous battles and harsh training rather than remaining safe after gaining power. 1 25 51
He is calculating and adaptable in battle, using observation, terrain, flight, spatial movement, and psychological weaknesses to offset numerical disadvantages. He is also willing to learn from anyone useful, whether secretly copying Marine techniques, accepting Roger’s swordsmanship guidance, or studying cursed blades. 10 20 53 104
Nangong Yan is ruthless toward enemies and obstacles, capable of massacres, coercion, and exploiting fear to secure his goals. However, he also protects people he considers his own, rewards subordinates, trains promising crew members, and shows genuine affection toward Momousagi and their daughter. 5 74 178 303
Abilities & Skills
Mythical Zoan: Golden Crow Fruit
Nangong Yan’s primary Devil Fruit grants him the characteristics and powers of the Golden Crow, with Solar True Flame as its defining offensive power. 3
- Transforms between human, half-beast, and Golden Crow forms. 3 16
- Flies at extremely high speed, allowing him to control engagements and escape encirclements. 4 102
- Controls pale-golden Solar True Flame, which is highly destructive and difficult to extinguish. 3
- Replenishes stamina by absorbing sunlight; direct sunlight can rapidly restore his combat endurance. 3 104
- Uses Golden Crow claws and wings for close combat, aerial mobility, and weapon support. 7 52
- Awakening grants Sun God Flame, a far stronger connection to sunlight, and a physique compared to that of a divine bird. 200
- His Ten Suns technique manifests ten suns embodying the cycles of life and death; he considers it his strongest weapon. 314
- As a Devil Fruit user, he cannot swim. 3
Mangekyō Sharingan
Nangong Yan’s Mangekyō Sharingan provides spatial manipulation, perception, copying, illusion techniques, and Susanoo. Its early use carries severe stamina and ocular-power costs. 2 3
- Kamui — creates spatial vortices for teleportation, storage, battlefield escape, and entry into the Kamui Dimension. 14 15
- Intangibility — can hide his true body in the Kamui Dimension, allowing attacks and weapons to pass through him. 120 320
- Copying ability — enables him to learn swordsmanship and physical techniques through observation once he understands their fundamentals. 10
- Genjutsu and hypnosis — traps targets in illusions, controls information sources, and can disrupt opponents in combat. 13 51 320
- Susanoo — manifests a powerful defensive and offensive construct; he later reaches its third form. 27 52
- Limitation — at the start of his training, maintaining the Mangekyō for more than roughly fifteen minutes exhausts him completely. 3
Haki
Nangong Yan develops all three major forms of Haki as his strength rises.
- Observation Haki — predicts attacks, enhances battlefield awareness, and complements his Sharingan. 26
- Armament Haki — reinforces his body, claws, swords, and Solar True Flame techniques. 26 45
- Conqueror’s Haki — clashes directly with Red-Hair Shanks’ Conqueror’s Haki, though Shanks initially proves superior in that exchange. 134
Swordsmanship
Nangong Yan is a Great Swordsman whose style is deliberately unconventional, switching blades between both hands and his abdominal Golden Crow claw. 53 55
- Reached the Swordmaster realm under Roger’s guidance. 20
- Reached Great Swordsman status after integrating the Seven Star Sword’s insights and comprehending the breath of all things. 55
- Uses asymmetric three-handed sword combinations that opponents find difficult to read or adapt to. 52 53
- Notable techniques include One Sword Severs the Mountain, Sword at the Edge of Life and Death, Random Blades, and Flame: One Sword Severs the Mountain. 12 83 136
Heal-Heal Fruit
After a surgical procedure on Drum Island, Nangong Yan becomes a dual Devil Fruit user by consuming the Heal-Heal Fruit. 125
- Can theoretically heal injuries and illnesses, dramatically improving his endurance in prolonged combat. 159
- Produces medicinal liquid through the Fruit’s power to support others’ recovery and training. 178
- Its awakening greatly enhances his healing capability and complements his Golden Crow powers. 314
- Combines with Kamui, Rebirth from the Ashes, and Izanagi to make him exceptionally difficult to kill. 120 159
True Yang Body Tempering and Forging
Nangong Yan uses his affinity with the sun to temper his body and applies Solar True Flame to blacksmithing. 74
- True Yang Body Tempering Technique — burns away bodily impurities and steadily strengthens his flesh through sunlight. 74
- Ordinary bullets and unenhanced swords become largely ineffective against his tempered physique. 74
- Learns enough forging to create weapons only a step below Named Blades. 74
- Later assists master smiths in fusing Murasame Maru and the Seven Star Sword into a new cursed blade. 178
