Background / History

Nangong Yan founded the crew after leaving Divine Punishment Island, where he had secured the loyalty of the island’s Tyrannosaurus, pterosaur, and giant python overlords. At Orange Island, he named his ship the Great Sun Fusang and formally declared the crew’s name and guiding philosophy: to gather “all demons beneath heaven” and live freely without being bound by race, fame, profit, rules, or restraint 28.

The crew’s first major expansion came after the Roger Pirates disbanded. The Demon Emperor Pirates struck first, occupying the northwestern region of Roger’s former territory before expanding east and south against the Beasts Pirates and Big Mom Pirates. Nangong Yan subsequently established the crew’s headquarters on Fire Island, renaming it Demon Emperor Island 67 68.

Following these conflicts, the crew organized its initial nine divisions and promoted battle-tested former Impel Down prisoners into its command structure. Its rise, territorial gains, and Nangong Yan’s defeat of Kaido’s forces established it as one of the New World’s four dominant powers 73 74 119.

After Nangong Yan defeated Kaido, Whitebeard, Shanks, and Big Mom, the crew occupied the Sugarcane Archipelago and additional territory taken from the defeated Emperor crews. Morgans’ newspaper then declared Nangong Yan the “Strongest Man in the World,” while the Demon Emperor Pirates came to be regarded as the world’s foremost pirate crew 153 154.

The crew initially had nine divisions, each with roughly 3,000–4,000 members. After its victory over the Marines, the original nine primary combat divisions were standardized at 5,500 members each, with one captain, two vice-captains, and ten officers per division 189.

A separate force directly under Nangong Yan was expanded from Sky Island troops and Demon Emperor Island’s original elite garrison to 8,000 personnel 189.

Territory and Governance

The Demon Emperor Pirates control the largest territory among the Emperor crews. At one point, their holdings covered nearly one-third of the New World, while their forces exceeded 100,000 men 137 227.

Unlike several rival Emperor crews, the Demon Emperor Pirates do not rely on exploiting civilians for income. Their territories receive relief and protection, producing a mixture of fear, gratitude, and loyalty among local populations 189.
