Background / History

Garp is an immensely renowned Marine vice admiral whose fists repeatedly drove Pirate King Gol D. Roger into desperate situations. He is stationed around Marine Headquarters and is a longtime associate of Fleet Admiral Sengoku. 7

After Sengoku receives Vice Admiral Verne's report about the six-year-old Ye Feng and five-year-old Avril's extraordinary Haki and swordsmanship, Garp is stunned by their abilities and ages. 8

Garp travels to Windmill Village to investigate Shanks losing an arm in his hometown and to check on Luffy. There, Ye Feng attacks him with sword aura; Garp destroys the attack with an Armament Haki-coated fist. 15

Recognizing Ye Feng as Gral's killer and Avril as his sister, Garp unilaterally adopts them as his grandchildren, renaming them Monkey D. Ye Feng and Monkey D. Avril. He leaves both children in Dadan's care and says he will return to bring them into the Marines when they are older. 16 17

Years later, Garp brings Avril into the Marines, where she becomes a notable young Marine. He remains in contact with Ye Feng and encourages him to travel to the New World. 36 41

When Ye Feng reaches Marineford, Garp recognizes his growth, becomes alarmed by his peak Swordmaster realm, and attempts to recruit him into the Marines before he can become a pirate threat. 49 50

Garp subsequently escorts Ye Feng through Marine enlistment and takes responsibility for his development, demonstrating the Six Powers and agreeing to train Ye Feng's Haki after the boy reveals his Conqueror's Haki. 53 147 154 155

Although Garp objects to Ye Feng's appointment as CP9 chief because of the organization's covert and immoral work, he ultimately warns Ye Feng to protect his principles. When the World Government's attention turns toward Avril as well, Garp takes her into his own residence and threatens to turn hostile if they attempt to take her. 232 234 235

Appearance

Garp is a middle-aged man recognizable by his dog-head hat during his earlier appearance and his Marine coat marked with “Justice” at Marineford. 7 49

  • Often wears a dog-head hat while at Marine Headquarters. 7
  • Wears a white Marine coat bearing the word “Justice.” 49
  • Uses a large dog-headed Marine warship. 15
  • Changes into a clean vice admiral's uniform after his battle with Rayleigh. 328

Personality

Garp is boisterous, irreverent, and frequently sleeps or eats senbei while on duty. He teases Sengoku, ignores formal hierarchy, and openly treats the Fleet Admiral's office as though it were his own. 7 8 50

Despite his rough behavior, he is protective of his family. His investigation in Windmill Village is motivated by concern for Luffy, while his adoption of Ye Feng and Avril reflects both affection and a desire to keep two dangerous prodigies aligned with the Marines. 15 16 50

He expresses affection through blunt discipline, repeatedly using his “Iron Fist of Love” against Ye Feng when the boy calls him an old man or resists him. 16 49 50

Garp is intensely proud of Ye Feng and Avril's talent, routinely attributing their achievements to his own “excellent genes” despite Ye Feng being adopted. He eagerly boasts about Ye Feng before Sengoku and Rayleigh. 59 327

His carefree temperament does not prevent him from becoming deeply serious when his family is threatened. Ye Feng's disappearance from Marineford, his possible corruption within CP9, and the World Government's interest in Avril each provoke visible anger and concern from Garp. 143 232 234 235

Although he is a Marine hero, Garp is uneasy with the Marines' harshest actions. He opposes exposing Ye Feng to the brutality of the Ohara Buster Call and worries that CP9 missions will lead him astray. 192 232 234

Garp fosters an unusually informal atmosphere aboard his warship, where rank is less rigid and the Marines regard one another as companions. 343

  • Easily inflicts painful head strikes on Ye Feng despite the latter's high swordsmanship realm. 16 49 50
  • Overwhelms Rayleigh in close combat through his immense physical power, forcing the swordsman to rely on superior swordsmanship to offset the difference in raw strength. 326 327
  • Launches a Sea King hundreds of meters long into the air with one punch. 340 341
  • Destroys incoming water columns and transmits enough force through them to severely injure Sea Kings hundreds of meters away. 342

Haki

Garp demonstrates exceptional proficiency in Observation, Armament, and Conqueror's Haki.

  • Detected Ye Feng's surprise attack through Observation Haki. 15
  • Coated his hand in Armament Haki to destroy Ye Feng's sword aura. 15

  • Possesses Conqueror's Haki, which is regarded as unique among the currently known Marines. 148
  • His uncontrolled Conqueror's Haki release suppresses virtually all Marineford personnel below admiral-level strength, including Ye Feng. 234
  • Uses Haki mastery to fight Rayleigh evenly while withstanding powerful sword slashes with his fists. 326 327
  • Releases Conqueror's Haki against the Sea Kings pursuing his warship through the Calm Belt. 341

  • Uses Soru to rapidly reach Ye Feng after locating him on Sabaody Archipelago. 145
  • Demonstrates Soru, Geppo, Paper Art, Rankyaku, Finger Pistol, and Iron Body for Ye Feng. 154 155
  • Uses Soru at a speed far beyond Ye Feng's own during his battle with Rayleigh. 326

Combat Techniques

  • Iron Fist of Love — Garp's signature disciplinary head strike, usually inflicted on Ye Feng for disrespect or misbehavior. 16 49 50
  • Fist Bone: Meteor — A rapid barrage of air cannons produced by striking the air, used to counter Rayleigh's Slash Storm. 327
  • Fist Bone: Meteor Shower — A large-scale shell barrage capable of destroying pirate ships at sea. 348

Marine Influence

Garp has exceptional informal authority within Marine Headquarters.

  • Receives considerable latitude from Sengoku despite routinely disrupting his work. 8 41
  • Promises Ye Feng special privileges if he joins the Marines. 50
  • Kicks open Sengoku's office door, takes Sengoku's chair, and orders him to bring senbei and tea. 50
  • Is one of the Navy's Four Titans alongside Sengoku, Zephyr, and Crane, and is revered as the Hero of the Marines and an idol to younger Marines. 58
  • Leads elite Marine Headquarters personnel during his East Blue leave and arranges for them to support local Marine forces in his absence. 347
  • His arrival at Korod Marine Base is expected to deter pirates due to his combat power being regarded as comparable to an admiral's. 351

  • Vice Admiral Crane — fellow vice admiral who calls out Garp's overbearing behavior and often mediates his disputes with Sengoku. 50 51 115
